  1. 21. Estrogen and Glucocorticoid Metabolism

    Author : Therése Andersson; Tommy Olsson; Cecilia Mattsson; Ingegerd Söderström; Jonas Burén; Agneta Holmäng; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 11β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 1; Estrogen; Cortisol; Adipose tissue; Liver; Menopause; Ovariectomy; Adipocyte; Estrogen Receptor β; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women in Sweden. The risk of CVD increases rapidly after the menopause. A major contributing factor may be the redistribution of adipose tissue, from the peripheral to central depots, associated with menopause. READ MORE

  2. 22. The role of galectin-1 in type 2 diabetes. Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Emanuel Fryk; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; galectin-1; type 2 diabetes; human; adipose tissue; metabolism;

    Abstract : Aim: The purpose of this thesis was to identify a new agent in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and assess its clinical potential in the context of type 2 diabetes. Study I: Through a combination of microdialysis and mass-spectrometry, we found increased galectin-1 levels in the subcutaneous adipose tissue in a small experimental study of 15 men with and without type 2 diabetes. 3. 23. Alterations in peripheral glucocorticoid metabolism : effects of weight changes

    Author : Kotryna Simonyté; Cecilia Mattsson; Bo Angelin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 11ß Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1; obesity; glucocorticoids; cortisol; phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase; adipose tissue; liver; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Background: An important role has been suggested for tissue-specific glucocorticoid metabolism in the development of obesity and its complications. 11ß hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11ßHSD1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of biologically inactive cortisone to active cortisol, thereby regulating its access to glucocorticoid receptors in target tissues. 4. 24. WISP-2 - A Novel Adipokine Related to Obesity and Insulin resistance

    Author : John Grünberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adipose tissue; BMP4; Canonical WNT pathway; Insulin Resistance; Obesity; PPARγ; Type 2 Diabetes; WISP2;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is increasing worldwide at an epidemic rate and is expected to reach 592 million inflicted individuals by 2035 as compared to 382 million in 2013. Obesity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance, defined as an impaired cellular effect of insulin, and this precedes the development of T2D. READ MORE

  5. 25. Studies of the adipose tissue in insulin resistance with microdialysis

    Author : Madelene Sandqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is characterized by a combination of insulin resistance and an impaired insulin secretion. Theprevalence of the disease has taken epidemic proportions, and it is therefore of great concern to characterize itspathophysiology, as well as to identify individuals with increased risk for the disease, enabling to take measuresfor prevention and cure.
