  1. 1. Microbial Responses to Antibiotics – Stability of Resistance and Extended Potential of Targeting the Folate Synthesis

    Author : Maria Jönsson; Göte Swedberg; Steven Meshnick; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; sulfonamide resistance; macrolide; commensal flora; substrate channeling; folate synthesis; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Resistance to antimicrobials is an increasing problem in the world of today, and develops faster than man can counter. It is therefore of importance to study metabolic pathways in order to develop new antibiotics, but also to understand how resistance spreads and stabilizes in microbial populations. READ MORE

  2. 2. Sesquiterpene synthases in Artemisia annua: Cloning, Expression, and Characterisation of the Recombinant Enzymes

    Author : Per Mercke; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Artemisia annua; Sesquiterpene synthases; artemisinin; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : Plants produce a multitude of different compounds that may have biotic effects. Artemisia annua, produces a compound used as a drug against multi-drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite causing malaria. READ MORE

  3. 3. Elovl3 and very long chain fatty acids; role in metabolism

    Author : Andreas Jakobsson; Anders Jacobsson; James Ntambi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fatty acids metabolism elongation; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : Fatty acids (FA) are important in several aspects of cellular function, for example as structural molecules and metabolic substrates. The bulk of FA up to 16 carbons (palmitic acid) in length are synthesised by a cytosolic enzyme complex called fatty acid synthase (FAS), while FA can be further elongated into very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) by membrane-bound enzymes in the endoplasmatic reticulum (ER). 4. 4. Plant Major Intrinsic Proteins - natural variation and evolution

    Author : Jonas Danielson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MIP; aquaporin; plant; natural variation; evolution; Arabidopsis; Physcomitrella patens; NIP; XIP;

    Abstract : Major Intrinsic Proteins (MIPs, also called Aquaporins, AQPs) are channel forming membrane proteins. Although initially functionally characterized and named after their water channeling property in human red blood cells, it has become increasingly evident that MIPs are present in all types of organisms and transport a variety of small, uncharged molecules besides water. 5. 5. Optimizing Enzyme Immobilization in Mesoporous Silica - A Spectroscopic Study of the Dynamics and Spatial Distribution of the Confined Enzymes

    Author : Pegah Sadat Nabavi Zadeh; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fluorescence spectroscopy; dynamics; mesoporous silica; Immunogold staining; Transmission electron microscopy; anisotropy; microviscosity; real-time monitoring; Cy5.; Förster resonance energy transfer; Enzyme immobilization; Cy3;

    Abstract : Enzymes as biological catalysts are immobilized in porous materials to improve the enzyme activity and simplify their purification from the reaction media in biocatalytic applications. Mesoporous silica (MPS) particles are used as a promising support material for the immobilization of enzymes. READ MORE
