  1. 1. Effect of Substrate on Bottom-Up Fabrication and Electronic Properties of Graphene Nanoribbons

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Konstantin Simonov; Uppsala universitet.; [2016]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; graphene nanoribbons; bottom-up; substrate; metal contact; electronic structure; electron doping; PES; ARPES; NEXAFS; STM; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : Taking into account the technological demand for the controlled preparation of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with well-defined properties, the present thesis is focused on the investigation of the role of the underlying metal substrate in the process of building GNRs using bottom-up strategy and on the changes in the electronic structure of GNRs induced by the GNR-metal interaction. The combination of surface sensitive synchrotron-radiation-based spectroscopic techniques and scanning tunneling microscopy with in situ sample preparation allowed to trace evolution of the structural and electronic properties of the investigated systems. 2. 2. Life strategies for substrate assimilation by freshwater bacterioplankton

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Monica Ricão Canelhas; Uppsala universitet.; [2016]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lake; methane; bacteria; substrate; methanotrophs; pulse; chemostat;

    Abstract : The availability of substrates is one of the most important environmental constraints on the diversity and functioning of microorganisms. Substrate quantity and quality as well as the metabolic features of heterotrophic microorganisms determine the efficiency, speed and type of transformation that can occur in nature. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gold-Based Nanoparticles and Thin Films Applications to Green Nanotechnology

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Pia Lansåker; Uppsala universitet.; [2012]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; green nanotechnology; transparent conductors; nanoparticles; gold coalescence; substrate effect; temperature effect; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The use of gold-based nanoparticles and thin films is very promising when it comes to improving several green nanotechnologies. Therefore, in order to further their use in applications such as electrochromic devices, photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes and photocatalysis, the aim of this work was to study the growth of gold-based nanoparticles and thin films. 4. 4. Living on the edge effectiveness of buffer strips in protecting biodiversity on boreal riparian forests

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Kristoffer Hylander; Umeå universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; boreal forest; bryophyte; buffer strip; ecological boundary; edge effect; headwater stream; land snail; liverwort; moss; phytometer; riparian forest; substrate; terrestrial gastropod; Ekologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the ecological consequences of buffer strip retention on riparian and terrestrial biodiversity. Earlier studies on forest buffer strips have evaluated their effectiveness in relation to water quality and aquatic biota. However, forests along streams are species rich habitats for many organism groups. READ MORE

  5. 5. Enzyme substrate solvent interactions a case study on serine hydrolases

    University dissertation from Stockholm : KTH

    Author : Linda Fransson; KTH.; [2008]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; lipase; esterase; specificity; TECHNOLOGY Bioengineering; TEKNIKVETENSKAP Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Reaction rates and selectivities were measured for transacylation of fatty acid esters in solvents catalysed by Candida antarctica lipase B and by cutinase from Humicola insolens. With these enzymes classical water-based enzymology can be expanded to many different solvents allowing large variations in interaction energies between the enzymes, the substrates and the surrounding.
