1. Endocannabinoid metabolism : the impact of inflammatory factors and pharmacological inhibitors
Abstract : The endocannabinoid (eCB) system is an endogenous signaling system consisting of ligands (referred to as endocannabinoids, eCBs), receptors and metabolic enzymes. The eCB system is involved in homeostatic control of a variety of biological functions such as neuronal signaling, mood, appetite and pathological conditions such as pain, inflammation and tumour progression. 2. Molecular Mechanism of Growth Hormone - Involvement of Janus Kinase 2, Insulin Receptor Substrate-1 and -2 and Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase In the Acute Insulin-Like Effects of Growth Hormone In Primary Rat Adipocytes
Abstract : Originally studying the molecular mechanisms for the insulin-like effects of growth hormone (GH), lipogenesis and antilipolysis, in isolated rat adipocytes we found that the GH receptor (GHR) was tyrosine phosphorylated in response to GH in cells that were responsive to these effects. Then, as Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) was described as a GH-stimulated and GHR-associated tyrosine kinase, we found that JAK2 was tyrosine phosphorylated in response to GH in responsive cells. READ MORE

3. Perinatal Energy Substrate Metabolism : Glucose Production and Lipolysis in Pregnant Women and Newborn Infants with Particular Reference to Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)
Abstract : Glucose is the most important fetal nutrient and the production of this substrate increases in the pregnant woman. In the last trimester the increased insulin resistance directs energy substrates to the fetus. Fetal growth is sometimes disturbed, often without an obvious explanation. READ MORE

4. The conserved methionines in the chloroplast small heat shock protein - Role in chaperone-substrate interactions and effects of methionine sulfoxidation on chaperone activity
Abstract : The chloroplast-localized small heat shock protein (sHsp) Hsp21 belongs to the family of alpha-crystallin like sHsps which form large oligomeric structures and protect partly unfolded aggregation-prone proteins against aggregation. The main focus for this thesis has been on the highly conserved methionines in Hsp21. READ MORE

5. Ferrochelatase and Magnesiumchelatase: Metal chelation studied with mutants
Abstract : Magnesium chelatase and ferrochelatase are two very important enzymes, which are involved in chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis, respectively. They both use protoporphyrin IX as substrate but magnesium chelatase inserts a magnesium ion whereas ferrochelatase inserts a ferrous ion. These two enzymes have been studied in this thesis. READ MORE
