  1. 1. Gut microbes and the developing brain

    Author : Tim Arentsen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The discovery that commensal gut microbiota can influence host development and physiology beyond the gastrointestinal (GI) tract has triggered a paradigm shift in our conceptualization of the origin of human diseases. A growing body of preclinical research has demonstrated that gut microbiota exert a modulatory role on the development and function of brain circuits involved in motor control, emotion and cognition. 2. 2. Distribution of antiviral nucleoside analogues into brain and skin

    Author : Natalia Borg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study physiological and physico-chemical factors influencing the pharmacokinetics and distribution over the blood-brain barrier of antiviral nucleoside analogues in the rat, and to study the distribution to the human skin in vivo of an anti-herpetic nucleoside analogue. Microdialysis was used to sample the free (unbound) extracellular concentration of the nucleoside analogues from the brain tissue, muscle and blood in the rat and from the dermis of healthy human volunteers. 3. 3. Stereotactic microdialysis for metabolic assessment and experimental treatment of malignant glioma

    Author : Pedram Tabatabaei; A. Tommy Bergenheim; Mikael Johansson; Maria Zetterling; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brain microdialysis; Glioblastoma multiforme; Malignant glioma; Retrograde microdialysis; Glucose metabolism; Radiotherapy; Chemotherapy; Cytokine.; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Glioblastoma multiforme, the most common primary brain tumor, has a dire prognosis despite multimodal treatments that include surgery and radio-chemotherapy. To improve the outcome of this destructive disease, we need to improve our understanding of its tumor biology. READ MORE

  4. 4. Brain-gut-adipose interplay in the antidiabetic effects of gastric bypass surgery

    Author : Kristina Almby; Jan Eriksson; Bo Ahrén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Gastric bypass surgery (GBP) leads not only to considerable and consistent weight loss but to a number of beneficial metabolic effects, often including a swift remission of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Increases in the gut hormone GLP-1 are considered central to this effect, although several other mechanism are likely involved. READ MORE

  5. 5. Functional Analysis of the Vesicular Glutamate Transporter 2 in Specific Neuronal Circuits of the Brain

    Author : Karin Nordenankar; Åsa Wallén-Mackenzie; Rainer Spanagel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Addiction; amphetamine; affective behaviour; cocaine; cognitive behaviour; conditional knockout mouse; dopamine; operant self-administration; reward system; schizophrenia; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : A key issue in neuroscience is to determine the connection between neuronal circuits and behaviour. In the adult brain, all neuronal circuits include a glutamatergic component. READ MORE
