1. Process Utility Performance Evaluation and Enhancements in the Traditional Sugar Cane Industry
Abstract : The need to achieve sustainable development has led to devising various approaches for the efficient utilization of natural resources. Renewable energy technology and energy efficiency measures feature prominently in this regard, and in particular for industries such as sugar production: the sugar cane industry’s eponymous feedstock is a renewable resource, and mills have potential for increased energy savings via improvements to cogeneration units, electric drive retrofitting, and other measures. 2. Exploring resistance to Aphanomyces cochlioides in sugar beet
Abstract : Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is one of the two main sources of sucrose, second only to sugar cane, accounting for nearly 30% of sugar production worldwide. The viability of the crop is threatened by the attack of pathogens that cause various diseases, resulting in severe yield losses. READ MORE

3. Comparative study of residue pellets from cane sugar and palm-oil industries with commercial wood pellets, applied in downdraft gasification
Abstract : While biomass utilization for energy conversion in the industrialized nations is being largely developed, highly efficient and environmentally friendly, many tropical countries still use biomass at low efficiencies and high emission levels. The main reasons for these gaps are both political and technological: the energy markets are different, the Gross National Product (GDP) differs widely, and the feedstock differs in form and conversion behaviour. 4. Study of possibilities and some problems of using cane residues as fuel in a gas turbine for power generation in the sugar industry
Abstract : The potential of cane residuals as a source of energy could help many developing countries to improve their balance of payments by decreasing fossil fuels imports and increasing the electrical power production. A substantial increase of the electricity output in the sugar industry could be achieved by using a combined gas turbine/steam turbine integrated with gasifier supplying combustible gas to the gas turbine combustor. 5. Fermentation and Cultivation Technology for Improved Ethanol Production from Lignocellulose
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis has been aiming at improving ethanol production from lignocellulose. Ethanol from renewable resources is receiving renewed attention due to apprehensions of global warming and dwindling oil reserves. Lignocellulose constitutes a potential raw material source for large scale ethanol production. READ MORE
