11. Ethanol from Sugarcane Lignocellulosic Residues - Opportunities for Process Improvement and Production Cost Reduction
Abstract : Bioethanol from sugarcane is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, and the increasing demand for fuel ethanol has prompted studies on the use of the lignocellulosic residues of sugarcane, namely bagasse and leaves, as new feedstock. This thesis describes various process designs and the economic feasibility of producing second generation (2G) ethanol from bagasse and leaves via the enzymatic route in an integrated sugarcane biorefinery, where first-generation (1G) ethanol is produced from sugarcane sugar. 12. The interplay between atmosphere, hydrology and land use by environmental modelling
Abstract : Interactions between land surface and atmosphere induced by human activities and natural environmental dynamics act on a time scale that varies from seconds to millions of years. It is by exchanging heat, water, energy and carbon that land surface and atmospheric processes are closely interrelated and influence each other in reciprocal ways. READ MORE

13. Evaluation of process parameters and treatments of different raw materials for biogas production
Abstract : The anaerobic digestion process results in the production of biogas from a large diversity of organic residues, which can be used as an alternate source of energy generation and for waste management. However, the biogas production technology is not exploited efficiently due to the characteristics of raw materials, poor methane yields, process instability, limited raw materials and lack of knowledge about the process. 14. Occupational heat exposure and kidney disease - Studies on the role of heat stress in the Mesoamerican epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of non-traditional origin
Abstract : This thesis examines the association between heat stress and kidney disease in Mesoamerica using different perspectives and methods. An ecologic study found that hot, sugarcane-cultivating regions had elevated chronic kidney disease (CKD) mortality. READ MORE

15. Assessing the sustainability of bioethanol production in different development contexts: A systems approach
Abstract : The continuous depletion of fossil fuel reserves, the global agenda on climate change and threats to energy security have led to increased global interest in the exploration, production and utilisation of bioenergy and biofuels. Access to modern bioenergy carriers derived from the efficient conversion of locally available biomass resources is indispensable for economic growth, rural development and sustainable development in developing countries.
