  1. 1. Neural control of colonic epithelial transport, motility and permeability in vivo. An experimental study in anaesthetized rats

    Author : Ying Sun; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; enteric nervous system; colonic motility; transmural potential difference; net; fluid transport; permeability; bile acid; nitric oxide; inflammatory bowel disease;

    Abstract : Colonic dysfunction may result in diarrhoea, abdominal pain or constipation, andinflammatory bowel disease, bile acid malabsorption and particularly irritable bowelsyndrome are very common disorders. The role of the enteric nervous system (ENS) inthese diseases is largely unknown. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effects of Vibrio cholerae protease and pigment production on environmental survival and host interaction

    Author : Karolis Vaitkevicius; Sun Nyunt Wai; Timo Korhonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bacteria-host interaction; Nematode; Metalloprotease; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Only two out of more than 200 V. cholerae serogroups, classified on the basis of LPS structure, are associated with epidemic or pandemic cholera. These toxigenic serogroups carry phage-derived pathogenicity islands coding for the main virulence factors for establishment of cholera disease – cholera toxin (CTX) and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP). 3. 3. Skin cancer prevention : behaviours related to sun exposure and early detection

    Author : Richard Bränström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Skin cancer; malignant melanoma; sun exposure; sunburn; sun protection; prevention; early detection;

    Abstract : Skin cancer is an emerging public health problem in Sweden. Even though the most important risk factor for the development of skin cancer - sun exposure - is known, the incidence of skin cancer is still increasing. Every year approximately 30,000 people in Sweden are diagnosed with skin cancer and approximately 400 die of this condition. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cutaneous malignant melanoma : body site, sun exposure, genetic factors and prognosis

    Author : Daniela Gordon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Melanoma;

    Abstract : Background: The interplay between tumor site, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, genetic factors and various epidemiological parameters of cutaneous melanoma is complex. In this thesis, we aimed to investigate the impact of detailed body site of the primary tumor beyond the conventional and strictly anatomic division of the head-neck, trunk, upper- and lower extremities, focusing on body site division according to UVR exposure patterns in relation to risk, outcome and other factors. 5. 5. Sun exposure, prevalence and localization of common melanocytic naevi in Swedish children

    Author : Maria Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: The rapidly rising incidence rates of cutaneous malignant melanoma call for more effective prevention strategies. Melanoma susceptibility is associated with having many common melanocytic naevi. Having fair skin, blonde/ash-blonde hair and grey/blue/green eye colour are also joint risk factors for melanoma and naevi. READ MORE
