  1. 1. Distant supernovae and galaxies in the Stockholm VIMOS Supernova Survey

    Author : Laia Mencia Trinchant; Göran Östlin; Duilia F de Mello; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; imaging surveys; photometric redshfits; Lyman Break galaxies; supernova typing; supernova rates; supernova host galaxies; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Multi colour imaging surveys help astronomers to find galaxies and clusters,and to gain insights on their physical properties and evolution. In this thesis, I present the Stockholm VIMOS Supernova Survey (SVISS), where the ELAIS-S field was observed with VIMOS UBVRI broad-band optical bands over a period of 5 years. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Frequency of Supernovae in the Early Universe

    Author : Jens Melinder; Claes Fransson; Enrico Cappellaro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supernovae; supernova typing; supernova rates; photometric redshifts; Lyman Break Galaxies; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Supernovae are cosmic explosions of cataclysmic proportion that signify the death of a star. While being interesting phenomena in their own right, their brightness also make them excellent probes of the early universe. Depending on the type of the progenitor star and the origin of the explosion different subjects can be investigated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Supernovae seen through gravitational telescopes

    Author : Tanja Petrushevska; Rahman Amanullah; Ariel Goobar; Saurabh Jha; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supernovae; strong gravitational lensing; star formation history; supernova rates; supernovor Gravitationslins; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Galaxies, and clusters of galaxies, can act as gravitational lenses and magnify the light of objects behind them. The effect enables observations of very distant supernovae, that otherwise would be too faint to be detected by existing telescopes, and allows studies of the frequency and properties of these rare phenomena when the universe was young. 4. 4. Supernova surroundings on circumstellar and galactic scales

    Author : Anders Nyholm; Jesper Sollerman; Peter Lundqvist; Philip James; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supernovae; circumstellar medium; SNe Type IIn; iPTF13z; intermediate Palomar Transient Factory; active galactic nuclei; SN 2014J; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Some stars cease to be in a bright and destructive display called a supernova. This thesis explores what we can learn about supernovae (SNe) by studying their immediate surroundings, and what the SNe can teach us about their environments. READ MORE

  5. 5. Physics-informed inferences of galaxy clustering with Bayesian forward modelling

    Author : Eleni Tsaprazi; Jens Jasche; Ariel Goobar; Alkistis Pourtsidou; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; large-scale structure; galaxy clustering; supernovae; Bayesian statistics; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we showcase four novel approaches to constraining the relationship between cosmological observables and the large-scale structure. The majority of the energy content of the Universe in the concordance cosmological model remains largely unknown. READ MORE
