  1. 1. Type Ia Supernova Cosmology : Quantitative Spectral Analysis

    Author : Gastón Folatelli; Ariel Goobar; Enrico Cappellaro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Supernova; Cosmology; Spectroscopy; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Type Ia supernovae have been successfully used as standardized candles to study the expansion history of the Universe. In the past few years, these studies led to the exciting result of an accelerated expansion caused by the repelling action of some sort of dark energy. READ MORE

  2. 2. Distant supernovae and galaxies in the Stockholm VIMOS Supernova Survey

    Author : Laia Mencia Trinchant; Göran Östlin; Duilia F de Mello; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; imaging surveys; photometric redshfits; Lyman Break galaxies; supernova typing; supernova rates; supernova host galaxies; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Multi colour imaging surveys help astronomers to find galaxies and clusters,and to gain insights on their physical properties and evolution. In this thesis, I present the Stockholm VIMOS Supernova Survey (SVISS), where the ELAIS-S field was observed with VIMOS UBVRI broad-band optical bands over a period of 5 years. READ MORE

  3. 3. Observations of young core collapse supernova remnants

    Author : Anestis Tziamtzis; Lundqvist Peter; Sergey Zharikov; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supernova remnants; Crab; SN 1987A; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Studies of young remnants offer an opportunity to test theoretical models of stellar evolution, explosion models and nucleosynthesis, as well as our understanding of the compact objects in the centre of the exploded stars.The first part of the thesis involves observations of the Crab nebula. 4. 4. The Frequency of Supernovae in the Early Universe

    Author : Jens Melinder; Claes Fransson; Enrico Cappellaro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supernovae; supernova typing; supernova rates; photometric redshifts; Lyman Break Galaxies; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Supernovae are cosmic explosions of cataclysmic proportion that signify the death of a star. While being interesting phenomena in their own right, their brightness also make them excellent probes of the early universe. Depending on the type of the progenitor star and the origin of the explosion different subjects can be investigated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Looking for the high-mass progenitors of stripped-envelope supernovae

    Author : Emir Karamehmetoglu; Jesper Sollerman; Francesco Taddia; Punam Chandra; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Supernova; Supernovae; Stripped-envelope supernovae; SN Type Ibc; SN; SNe; SN progenitor; Type Ibn; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Stripped-envelope supernovae were thought to be the explosions of very massive stars (& 20 M) that lost their outer layers of hydrogen and/or helium in strong stellar winds. However, recent studies have highlighted that most stripped-envelope supernovae seem to be arising from rela- tively lower-mass progenitor stars in the 12 20 M(sun) range, creating a mystery about the fate of the higher-mass stars.
