  2. 2. Workpiece steels protecting cutting tools from wear : A study of the effects of alloying elements on material transfer and coating damage mechanisms

    Author : Toshiharu Aiso; Staffan Jacobson; Urban Wiklund; Staffan Söderberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Metal cutting; Steel; Cutting tools; Transfer; Coating; Sliding; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : The vision of this thesis is to improve the machinability of workpiece steels. Workpiece material frequently transfers to the cutting tools during machining, and the transfer layers then forming on the tools may give both good and bad effects on machining performance and tool life. 3. 3. Tribology at the Cutting Edge : A Study of Material Transfer and Damage Mechanisms in Metal Cutting

    Author : Julia Lundberg Gerth; Urban Wiklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Tribology; Metal cutting; Gear hobbing; Wear; Coating; Residual stress; Material transfer; Steel; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : The vision of this thesis is to improve the metal cutting process, with emphasis on the cutting tool, to enable stable and economical industrial production while using expensive tools such as hobs. The aim is to increase the tribological understanding of the mechanisms operating at a cutting edge and of how these can be controlled using different tool parameters. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings for corrosion protection of steel

    Author : Lina Ejenstam; Per M. Claesson; Agne Swerin; Jinshan Pan; Orlando Rojas; KTH; []
    Keywords : Superhydrophobic coating; hydrophobic coating; corrosion protection; contact angles; electrochemical measurements; surface characterization; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Since metals in general, and steels in particular, are vital construction materials in our modern society, the corrosion protection of said materials is of great importance, both to ensure safety and to reduce costs associated to corrosion. Previously, chromium (VI) and other harmful substances were effectively used to provide corrosion protection to steel, but since their use was heavily regulated around year 2000, no coating has yet been developed that, in a fully satisfactory manner, replaces their corrosion protective properties. 5. 5. Computed Tomography of Acetabular Cup Wear and Effect of Surface Roughness on Wear and Oxidation of UHMWPE Hip Prostheses

    Author : Anneli Jedenmalm; Ulf Gedde; André Stark; Karin Jacobson; Nicklas Axén; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hip prostheses; Computed Tomography; Surface roughness; UHMWPE; Wear; Coating; Gamma-irradiation; pin-on-disc; hip simulator; Medical engineering; Medicinsk teknik;

    Abstract : Aseptic loosening is the most common complication in total hip replacement (5- 10% at 10 years follow up). The magnitude of the problem is illustrated by the fact that about one million hip prostheses are implanted worldwide each year. READ MORE
