  1. 1. Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy Studies of Na Islands on Graphite, Impurity Interactions on Cu(111) and Low Temperature Structures of S/Cu(111)

    Author : Erik Wahlström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; photoelectron spectroscopy; Scanning tunnelling microscopy STM ; Na HOPG; scanning tunnelling spectroscopy STS ; metal quantum wells; surface impurity interaction; S Cu 111 ;

    Abstract : A scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) can reveal the atomic order of a surface as well as details of its electronic structure. In the present work STM, in combination with core and valence photo-electron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) was applied to three different systems: (i) simple metal quantum wells in the form of Na films and islands on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), (ii) low temperature S/Cu(111) structures discovered in the course of this work and (iii) impurities on Cu(111). 2. 2. Magnetic solotronics near the surface of a semiconductor and a topological insulator

    Author : Mohammad Reza Mahani; C.M. Canali; Biplab Sanyal; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic solotronics; Transition metal dopants; Dilute magnetism in semiconductors and topological insulators; Atomistic tight-binding models; DFT; Spin dynamics; Magnetic anisotropy; Scanning tunneling microscope.; Condensed Matter Physics; Kondenserade materians fysik;

    Abstract : Technology where a solitary dopant acts as the active component of an opto-electronic device is an emerging  field known as solotronics, and bears the promise to revolutionize the way in which information is stored, processed and transmitted. Magnetic doped semiconductors and in particular (Ga, Mn)As, the archetype of dilute magnetic semiconductors, and topological insulators (TIs), a new phase of quantum matter with unconventional characteristics, are two classes of quantum materials that have the potential to advance spin-electronics technology. 3. 3. Impact of material migration on plasma-facing components in tokamaks

    Author : Alvaro Garcia Carrasco; Marek Rubel; Didier Mazon; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fusion; material migration; wall conditioning; diagnostic mirrors; plasma-facing materials; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Plasma-wall interaction plays an essential role in the performance and safety of a fusion reactor. This thesis focuses on the impact of material migration on plasma-facing components. It is based on experiments performed in tokamaks: JET, TEXTOR and ASDEX Upgrade. READ MORE

  4. 4. Electrical Properties of Gold-related Defect Complexes in Silicon

    Author : Einar Sveinbjörnsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; DLTS; gettering; Au in Si; lithium diffusion; Au-H complexes; Au-Li complexes; deep levels; phosphorus diffusion; hydrogen in silicon;

    Abstract : This thesis describes three extensive experiments concerning the properties of gold as an impurity atom in crystalline silicon. The first study is an investigation of the effect of phosphorus diffusion on the distribution of gold atoms within a silicon crystal. READ MORE

  5. 5. Optically detected magnetic resonance studies of intrinsic defects in dilute nitrides and SiC

    Author : Nguyen Quoc Thinh; Marek Godlewski; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Self-interstitials, vacancies and antisites belong to an important class of defects -intrinsic defects - in compound semiconductors. They have been found to be common occurring defects in semiconductor crystals grown under non-optimized or non-equilibrium conditions or subject to high-energy particle bombardment. READ MORE
