  1. 1. Maternal Death Surveillance and Response in Tanzania : Challenges to successful implementation

    Author : Ali Said; Mats Målqvist; Claudia Hanson; Siriel Massawe; Andrea B Pembe; Jos van Roosmale; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Maternal death; Maternal death surveillance and response; maternal mortality; MDSR; maternal death review; MDR; quality improvements; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Tanzania has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios (MMR) in the world. Tanzania introduced the Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) system to facilitate deaths notification and learning from death reviews inorder to prevent future deaths. READ MORE

  2. 2. Epidemiological and statistical basis for detection and prediction of influenza epidemics

    Author : Armin Spreco; Toomas Timpka; Olle Eriksson; Örjan Dahlström; Jonas Ludvigsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : A large number of emerging infectious diseases (including influenza epidemics) has been identified during the last century. The emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases have a negative impact on global health. Influenza epidemics alone cause between 3 and 5 million cases of severe illness annually, and between 250,000 and 500,000 deaths. READ MORE

  3. 3. Autoimmune hepatitis : life, death and in-between

    Author : Åsa Danielsson Borssén; Mårten Werner; Soo Aleman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; autoimmune hepatitis; autoimmune liver disease; hepatocellular carcinoma; surveillance; pregnancy; pregnancy outcome; cirrhosis; fibrosis; epidemiology; cause of death; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Background Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic autoimmune liver disease that is overrepresented in women (75% of cases). Studies have described a 10-year survival after diagnosis near to that of the general population, but less is known about the long-term survival. READ MORE

  4. 4. Evaluating and optimizing surveillance and response strategies for malaria elimination in the Asia Pacific region

    Author : Chris Cotter; Andreas Mårtensson; Arantxa Roca-Feltrer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; malaria elimination; surveillance and response; reactive case detection; sociobehavorial; reactive drug administration; molecular diagnostics; microsatellite genotyping; Plasmodium vivax; low transmission;

    Abstract : Malaria case investigation and reactive case detection (RACD) activities are widely implemented in low transmission settings to identify additional malaria infections and gather surveillance information, but with varying degrees of success. Challenges in conducting RACD include poor diagnostic sensitivity (particularly for low density and asymptomatic infections), knowledge gaps among those conducting RACD, financial and resource constraints, and operational and logistical difficulties. Abstract : Bluetongue virus (BTV) causes the primarily vector-borne bluetongue disease of ruminants, which poses a permanent threat to Europe since new serotypes and strains are frequently introduced. Vaccination of cattle is essential to control BTV outbreaks. READ MORE
