  1. 1. Sutures bridging nerve defects

    Author : Peter Scherman; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; traumatology; Surgery; continuous longitudinal sutures; nerve repair; nerve regeneration; nerve defect; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : A new and simple method for the repair of nerve defects, in which sutures alone are used to guide regeneration between the nerve endings, was developed. Bilateral seven to 17 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged by continuous longitudinal sutures with or without different modifications, by conventional autologous nerve grafts or direct repair under tension as controls. 2. 2. Towards surgical use of matrix metalloproteinase biology

    Author : Björn Pasternak; Per Aspenberg; Pentti Tengvall; Yrjö T Konttinen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Achilles tendon; colon; tetracyclines; tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases TIMP ; wound healing.; colorectal surgery; extracellular matrix; humans; matrix metalloproteinases MMPs ; rats; surgical anastomosis; sutures; tendon injuries; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), such as collagenases, are a family of enzymes capable of degrading most constituents of the extracellular matrix. MMPs are thought to be involved in the aetiopathogenesis of tendon rupture. Additionally, failure of healing has in some instances been associated with elevated levels of MMPs. READ MORE

  3. 3. Overcoming the Barriers of Fine-Needle Aspiration

    Author : Filipe Marques; Niclas Roxhed; Heikki J. Nieminen; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cysts; Cystic fluid; Pancreatic Cancer; Fine-needle Aspiration; Early diagnosis; Surgical instruments; Nitinol; Absorbable sutures; Loop brush; Cythopathology; Rapid on-site evaluation; Microfluidics; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : Cysts, closed sac-like structures filled with fluid or air, can form anywhere in the body. In the majority of cases, cysts are benign (not cancerous). However, these structures can also be precursors of cancer, pointing to the location where cancer can originate. READ MORE

  4. 4. Evaluation of surgical methods for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence

    Author : Maud Ankardal; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : urinary incontinence; female; surgery; colposuspension; laparoscopic; laparoscopy; tension-free vaginal tape; stress urinary incontinence; mixed urinary incontinence; quality of life; long term results; health care costs; cost analyses; health priorities; vaginal surgery; Sweden;

    Abstract : Aims: Paper I & II: To compare the subjective and objective results of open Burch colposuspension and laparoscopic colposuspension using sutures or mesh and staples in randomised trials. Paper III: To assess the short and long term results of the Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT)-procedure in a large observational study and to identify factors predictive of successful outcome. 5. 5. Central and peripheral adaptation after nerve repair with a synthetic biocompatible adhesive

    Author : Thomas Landegren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The epineural repair technique is currently the accepted standard for peripheral nerve repair. However, due to the demanding nature of this method, it is not uncommon to delay or even omit action, especially in situations which are associated with extensive traumatic injuries. READ MORE
