  1. 11. Molecular population genetics of inducible defense genes in Populus tremula

    Author : Carolina Bernhardsson; Stefan Jansson; Santiago González-Martinez; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Populus; herbivore defense; adaptation; population genetics; population structure; association mapping; complex traits; evolutionär genetik; evolutionary genetics;

    Abstract : Plant-herbivore interactions are among the most common of ecological interactions. It is therefore not surprising that plants have evolved multiple mechanisms to defend themselves, using both constitutive chemical and physical barriers and by induced responses which are only expressed after herbivory has occurred. 2. 12. Large-scale releases of native species : the mallard as a predictive model system

    Author : Pär Söderquist; Högskolan Kristianstad; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; NATURVETENSKAP; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Anas platyrhynchos; Farmed; Hunting; Introgression; Longevity; Mallard; Migration; Morphology; Population genetic; Restocking; SNPs; Sweden;

    Abstract : Human alteration of natural systems, and its consequences are of great concern and the impact on global ecosystems is one of the biggest threats that biodiversity stands before. Translocations of invasive species, as well as intraspecific contingents with non-native genotypes, whether they are deliberate or unintentional, are one such alteration and its consequences are continuously being assessed. 3. 13. Molecular epidemiology of streptococcus agalactiae : mobile elements as genetic markers

    Author : Shi-Lu Luan; Mari Norgren; Barbara Spellerberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococcus agalactiae; group II intron GBSi1 ; multilocus sequence typing; capsular serotype; population structure; Clinical bacteriology; Klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Streptococcus agalactiae, also designated group B streptococcus (GBS), is a Gram-positive coccus, and it is an important pathogen that causes invasive disease in neonates, pregnant adults, and non-pregnant adults with predisposing conditions. The group II intron GBSi1 is one of the major mobile genetic elements identified in S. agalactiae. READ MORE

  4. 14. Genetic Variation and Relatedness of Freshwater Pearl Mussel Margaritifera margaritifera L. populations

    Author : Amra Hadzihalilovic-Numanovic; Larry Greenberg; Nils Ryman; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Margaritifera margaritifera; genetic variation; age structure; genetic distance; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The two papers presented in this thesis focus on population genetic study on freshwater pearl mussel populations in Sweden, using RAPD method. In paper I, I examine genetic variation within and between 5 populations in a single drainage area in south western Sweden. READ MORE

  5. 15. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient

    Author : Katarina Olsson; Jon Ågren; Susan Kalisz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; additive genetic variance; clinal variation; evolutionary constraints; G matrix; genetic correlation; natural selection; pollen limitation; population differentiation; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution.
