21. Intrapatient evolution of HIV-1 in the context of coreceptor usage
Abstract : The variable region 1 to 3 (V1-V3) of the HIV-1 envelope plays an important role in coreceptor usage. Early in infection HIV- 1 is using CCR5 as coreceptor to enter target cells (R5 viruses) whereas viruses using CXCR4 as coreceptor (X4 viruses) may appear later in infection. READ MORE

22. Optimisation of Railway Switches and Crossings
Abstract : Methods for simulation-based optimisation of the design of railway turnouts (switches & crossings, S&C) are developed and demonstrated. Building on knowledge of dynamic wheel–rail interaction in turnouts, it is investigated how rail profile degradation can be reduced by the optimisation of geometry and component stiffness of the track superstructure. 23. Metabolic regulation of nitrogen fixation in Rhodospirillum rubrum
Abstract : Nitrogen, along with carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, is amongst the most abundant elements in all living cells. The capability to convert atmospheric dinitrogen to biologically usable nitrogen compounds is only found in some prokaryotes. READ MORE

24. On millimeter and submillimeter wave focal plane arrays implemented with MEMS waveguide switches
Abstract : This thesis presents research towards enabling micromachined millimeter and submillimeter wave focal plane arrays (FPAs). The FPAs operate under the following principle: a switch network consisting of microelectromechanical (MEMS) switches, integrated with micromachined waveguides, is used to feed an array of antenna elements, located in the focal plane of a high-gain quasi-optical system. 25. Charge transport modulation in organic electronic diodes
Abstract : Since the discovery of conducting polymers three decades ago the field of organic electronics has evolved rapidly. Organic light emitting diodes have already reached the consumer market, while organic solar cells and transistors are rapidly maturing. One of the great benefits with this class of materials is that they can be processed from solution. READ MORE
