  1. 11. Anaesthetics and the blood vessel wall. Actions of propofol and sevoflurane on sympathetic and endothelial control of smooth muscle function

    Author : Karin Thorlacius; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anaesthesiology; intensive care; Anestesiologi; intensivvård; vein.; artery; endothelium; sympathetic nervous system; inhalation agent sevoflurane; Anaesthesia; intravenous propofol;

    Abstract : The anaesthetics we use today dose-dependently decrease the mean arterial pressure partly due to direct or indirect effects on the blood vessels. In the present thesis human omental arteries and veins and rat femoral arteries were investigated in vitro concerning the effects of the intravenous anaesthetic propofol and the volatile anaesthetic sevoflurane on the function of the perivascular sympathetic nerves and the endothelial cells. 2. 12. A role of sympathetic nervous system in immunomodulation of early experimental African trypanosomiasis

    Author : Yajuan Liu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness is a protozoan disease prevalent in Sub-saharan Africa. It is caused by the genus Trypanosoma and occurs in humans and animals and is transmitted by infected tsetse flies. Trypanosoma brucei (T b.) rhodesiense and T b. READ MORE

  3. 13. Lineages and molecular heterogeneity in the developing nervous system

    Author : Gioele La Manno; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Information in the genome unfolds through a dynamic process leading to the molecular and anatomical organization of a physiologically functional organism. The nervous system is the most diverse and intricate architecture generated by this process. READ MORE

  4. 14. Neuroblastoma Cell Differentiation: The Role of Neurotrophin Receptor Signaling and N-myc Expression

    Author : Anders Edsjö; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cytologi; onkologi; cancer; oncology; cancerology; Cytology; N-myc.; trkC; trkB; trkA; neurotrophins; Neuroblastoma; sympathetic nervous system;

    Abstract : Neuroblastoma is a tumor of sympathetic nervous system derivation, mostly afflicting young children. This thesis is focused on a group of receptor proteins for neurotrophic factors, the Trk family, and on N-Myc, a transcription factor, all important in the formation of the sympathetic nervous system as well as in determining neuroblastoma patient outcome. Abstract : During pregnancy, the basal activity is increased in both of our major stress response systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. At the same time, the reactivity towards stressors is reduced. These alterations sustain maternal and fetal homeostasis, and are involved in the regulation of gestational length. READ MORE
