  3. 3. Splanchnic perfusion in cardiac surgery

    Author : Anders Thorén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Splanchnic circulation; jejunal mucosal perfusion; laser Doppler flowmetry; cardiopulmonary bypass; cardiac surgery; inotropic agents; gastric tonometry; sympathetic reflex;

    Abstract : Splanchnic ischemia in cardiac surgery is considered a risk factor in the development of the Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care unit. Splanchnic ischemia/reperfusion may lead to an injury of the intestinal mucosa and induce a systemic inflammation (SIRS), which is proposed to precede MODS. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of sympathetic nerve activity in cutaneous nerves in healthy subjects using intraneural microneurography : The relationship between nerve activity and effector organ response

    Author : Pirkko Hynninen; Anna Rostedt Punga; Roland Flink; Kristin Ørstavik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Human; microneurography; neurophysiology; sympathetic nerve activity;

    Abstract : The aim of the research presented in this thesis is to gain new knowledge of the characteristic features of sympathetic nerve activity of cutaneous nerves in healthy adult humans using intraneural microneurography. One further goal is to study the relationship between nerve activity and effector organ response. READ MORE

  5. 5. Response of human skeletal muscle to chronic and acute exercise and ischemia : muscle dimensions, tissue water and blood flow as measured by magnetic resonance imaging and comparative methods

    Author : Anders T Nygren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bloodflow; cross-sectional area; exercise; fiber area; Gd-DTPA; glycogen; human; hypotrophy; intermittent claudication; ischemia; magnetic resonance imaging; metabolism; perfusion; reflex sympathetic activity skeletal muscle; training; transverse relaxation; ultrasonography.;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate the response of human skeletal muscle to exercise, training and ischemi and to evaluate if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be used to measure regional muscle cross-sectional area, muscle perfusion and detect muscle ischemia in patients with intermittent claudication. For this purpose studies were performed on 29 healthy young volunteers and 7 patients with intermittent claudication. READ MORE
