  1. 21. Characterization of antigen-presenting cell function in vitro and ex vivo

    Author : Pablo Giusti; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Stefania Varani; David Roberts; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; Antigen presentation; Dendritic Cells; Macrophages; Toll-like receptors; Malaria; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Long-term protective immunity depends on proper initiation of professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Autoimmune disorders and certain infections can cause disease through modulation of APCs and thereby affecting the outcome of these diseases. READ MORE

  2. 22. Host genetic factors and antibody responses with potential involvement in the susceptibility to malaria

    Author : Elisabeth Israelsson; Klavs Berzins; Jean Langhorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : The relatively lower susceptibility to malaria seen in the Fulani ethnic group in Africa, as compared to other sympatric ethnic groups, has been related to genetic regulation of the immune responses. This thesis aimed to describe important pathways related to the regulation of antibodies in the immune responses during a malaria infection. READ MORE

  3. 23. Interactions between Eurasian lynx and wolverines in the reindeer husbandry area

    Author : Jenny Mattisson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In conservation and management, carnivore species are often treated as isolated units, even though interspecific interactions can have important implications for the behaviour, demography and distribution of the species involved. In this thesis I used individual based GPS-location data to study interactions between two solitary predators in the reindeer husbandry area in Northern Scandinavia: The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), an obligate predator, and the wolverine (Gulo gulo), an opportunistic predator and scavenger. 4. 24. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy

    Author : Ekaterina Shevtsova; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chalcidoidea; parasitic wasps; structural colors; visual signaling; cryptic species; sexual dimorphism; wing membrane thickness; wing micro-morphology; wing cuticle ultrastructure;

    Abstract : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 5. 25. Dissecting the complexity of human susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum malaria: genetic approaches

    Author : Valentina D Mangano; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Marta Alarcon; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; immunology; genetics; malaria; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : There are many aspects of the immunology of P. falciparum infection that are not understood. Genetic approaches are of great value for dissecting the complexity of immune responses to malaria in natura by providing new insights into molecular interactions between the parasite and the host.
