  1. 11. Communication breakdown - synaptic dysfunction in Huntington's disease

    Author : Ruben Smith; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurodegeneration; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; cholinergic neuron; exocytosis; transmitter release; intracellular transport; insulin; Huntington s disease; synapse; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG-triplet expansion in the gene encoding the protein huntingtin. The disease typically starts in mid-life and progresses for 15-20 years. To date no effective treatment is available for curing the disease. HD primarily affects the striatum, cerebral cortex and hypothalamus. READ MORE

  2. 12. The Human Spiral Ganglion

    Author : Sven Tylstedt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Otorhinolaryngology; human spiral ganglion; ultrastructural morphology; neural interaction; synaptophysin; connexin; membrane specializations; synapse; gap junction; tight junction; Otorhinolaryngologi; Otorhinolaryngology; Otorhinolaryngologi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Abstract : Our knowledge of the fine structure of the Human Spiral Ganglion (HSG) is still inadequate and new treatment techniques for deafness using electric stimulation, call for further information and studies on the neuronal elements of the human cochlea. This thesis presents results of analyses of human cochlear tissue and specimens obtained during neurosurgical transpetrosal removal of life-threatening meningeomas. READ MORE

  3. 13. Complement mediated synapse elimination in schizophrenia

    Author : Jessica Florentina Gracias Lekander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a devastating psychiatric disorder with a typically age of onset in late adolescence. The heritability is estimated to be in between 60-80% and large-scale genome-wide studies have revealed a prominent polygenic component to SCZ risk and identified more than three-hundred common risk variants. 5. 15. Synaptic vesicle endocytosis studied in a living synapse

    Author : Helge Gad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : synapse; synaptic vesicles; endocytosis; clathrin; calcium; dynamin; endophilin; amphiphysin; synaptojanin; microinjection; electron microscopy;

    Abstract : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate by transmitting electrical signals at special sites of contact called synapses. Synapses contain neurotransmitter-filled synaptic vesicles, which fuse with the presynaptic plasma membrane. The neurotransmitter diffuses to the neighboring neuron and triggers a new electrical signal. READ MORE
