  1. 21. Developmental plasticity of the glutamate synapse: Roles of low frequency stimulation, hebbian induction and the NMDA receptor

    Author : Joakim Strandberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : AMPA receptor; Development; Glutamate; Hippocampus; Long-term depression; Long-term potentiation; NMDA receptor; Synaptic depression;

    Abstract : The glutamate synapse is by far the most common synapse in the brain and acts via postsynaptic AMPA, NMDA and mGlu receptors. During brain development there is a continuous production of these synapses where those partaking in activity resulting in neuronal activity are subsequently selected to establish an appropriate functional pattern of synaptic connectivity while those that do not are elimimated. 2. 22. Effects of influenza A virus infections and interferon-gamma on synapse formation and function in hippocampal neurons in culture

    Author : Johan Brask; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Influenza A virus; hippocampal neurons; interferon-gamma; electrophysiology; synapses.;

    Abstract : The central nervous system (CNS) can be the target for several infections that include those with RNA viruses. The parenchyma of the CNS is considered an immuneprivileged site since it is protected behind the blood-brain barrier, expresses no or only low levels of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules and contains a paucity of antigenpresenting cells that prime an immune response. 3. 23. Regulation of NK cell activity : studies of DAP12-associated receptors in immune synapse formation and in responses to cytomegalovirus infection

    Author : Hanna Sjölin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : NK cells; DAP12; MCMV Cytokines; Receptors; Signaling; packages;

    Abstract : Natural killer (NK) cell effector functions are important for innate resistance against tumor cells and viral infections. NK cells display a broad range of inhibitory and activating receptors on the cell surface, which ensure specificity. READ MORE

  4. 24. Cytoskeletal mechanisms in synaptic vesicle recycling

    Author : Jenny Gustafsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Synapse; actin cytoskeleton; synaptic vesicle; endocytosis;

    Abstract : This thesis explores cytoskeletal mechanisms involved in the recycling of synaptic vesicles. As an initial step it characterizes synapses formed by giant reticulospinal axons in lamprey and defines their use as a model system. The most common type of reticulospinal synapse, "simple synapse", appeared to be most suitable as an experimental model. READ MORE

  5. 25. Coordination of endocytosis at the synaptic periactive zone

    Author : Emma Evergren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Synapse; endocytosis; clathrin; dynamin; amphiphysin; synapsin; intersectin; actin cytoskeleton; immunogold electron microscopy.;

    Abstract : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate via specialized junctions called synapses. Neurotransmitter-filled vesicles are clustered at these junctions, where they are released in response to synaptic activity. To sustain reliable neurotransmission the synaptic vesicles are recycled locally. READ MORE
