  1. 16. Molecular mechanisms in synaptic vesicle recycling

    Author : Joel Jakobsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neurons communicate through specialized contacts called synapses, which consist of pre- and postsynaptic compartments separated by a narrow synaptic cleft. The stimulus- dependent rapid influx of calcium ions into the presynaptic compartment induces fusion of neurotransmitter-filled vesicles with the plasma membrane and release of their content into the synaptic cleft. 2. 17. Astrocyte-mediated short-term synaptic depression

    Author : My Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : glutamate; glia; plasticity; synapse; hippocampus;

    Abstract : Short-term synaptic plasticity, the activity-dependent regulation of synaptic efficacy that occurs in the timeframe of milliseconds to seconds, is a fundamental property of the synapse, mostly attributed to changes in release probability. These changes are commonly ascribed to intrinsic mechanisms in the presynaptic terminal and to different transmitters acting on the presynaptic terminal. READ MORE

  3. 18. Mechanisms underlying sustained synaptic release of glutamate

    Author : Oleg Shupliakov; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : synaptic transmission; synaptic vesicle proteins; synapsin; glutamate; glutamine; glutamate uptake; glia; spinal cord; hippocampus; neuromuscular junction; lamprey; crayfish; mouse.;

    Abstract : Fast communication between neurons in the brain is mediated mainly by amino acid transmitters, such as glutamate, GABA and glycine. These transmitters are stored in small synaptic vesicles which undergo exocytosis at synaptic release sites (active zones) in response to action potentials. READ MORE

  4. 19. Revealing Secrets of Synaptic Protein Interactions : A Biosensor based Strategy

    Author : Christian Seeger; U Helena Danielson; Sarah Lummis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surface plasmon resonance; biosensor; AMPA receptor; GABAA receptor; ligand-gated ion channel; A-kinase anchoring protein; caldendrin; calmodulin; HIV; fragment based drug discovery; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Protein interactions are the basis of synaptic function, and studying these interactions on a molecular level is crucial for understanding basic brain function, as well as mechanisms underlying neurological disorders. In this thesis, kinetic and mechanistic characterization of synaptic protein interactions was performed by using surface plasmon resonance biosensor technology. READ MORE

  5. 20. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment

    Author : Katherine Jakubs; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; synaptic plasticity; GABA; glutamate; GFP; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; neurogenesis; LPS; inflammation; epilepsy; SE; patch-clamp;

    Abstract : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. READ MORE
