  1. 21. Synaptic vesicle endocytosis studied in a living synapse

    Author : Helge Gad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : synapse; synaptic vesicles; endocytosis; clathrin; calcium; dynamin; endophilin; amphiphysin; synaptojanin; microinjection; electron microscopy;

    Abstract : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate by transmitting electrical signals at special sites of contact called synapses. Synapses contain neurotransmitter-filled synaptic vesicles, which fuse with the presynaptic plasma membrane. The neurotransmitter diffuses to the neighboring neuron and triggers a new electrical signal. READ MORE

  2. 22. Communication breakdown - synaptic dysfunction in Huntington's disease

    Author : Ruben Smith; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurodegeneration; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; cholinergic neuron; exocytosis; transmitter release; intracellular transport; insulin; Huntington s disease; synapse; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG-triplet expansion in the gene encoding the protein huntingtin. The disease typically starts in mid-life and progresses for 15-20 years. To date no effective treatment is available for curing the disease. HD primarily affects the striatum, cerebral cortex and hypothalamus. READ MORE

  3. 23. Coordination of endocytosis at the synaptic periactive zone

    Author : Emma Evergren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Synapse; endocytosis; clathrin; dynamin; amphiphysin; synapsin; intersectin; actin cytoskeleton; immunogold electron microscopy.;

    Abstract : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate via specialized junctions called synapses. Neurotransmitter-filled vesicles are clustered at these junctions, where they are released in response to synaptic activity. To sustain reliable neurotransmission the synaptic vesicles are recycled locally. READ MORE

  4. 24. K+ channels and the regulation of synaptic transmission

    Author : Evanthia Nanou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neuronal excitability is highly regulated by K+ channels that are activated by a voltage change across the plasma membrane or by a rise in intracellular Na+ or Ca2+ concentration. The main focus of this thesis has been to characterize the Na+-activated K+ (KNa) and the Ca2+-activated K+ (KCa) channels and to determine their role in regulating synaptic transmission in the lamprey spinal cord. 5. 25. Cellular and synaptic properties in the lamprey striatum

    Author : Jesper Ericsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The striatum is the main input structure of the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical nuclei that are central to the control of different patterns of motor behaviours and for the selection of actions, a fundamental problem facing all animals. The main focus of this thesis has been to characterize the cellular and synaptic mechanisms of the striatum and its relation to other basal ganglia nuclei in the lamprey. READ MORE
