  1. 1. Computerised Microtomography : Non-invasive imaging and analysis of biological samples, with special reference to monitoring development of osteoporosis in small animals

    Author : Mats Stenström; Gudrun Alm Carlsson; Carl Carlsson; Jim Elliot; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Computed microtomography; CμT; signal-to-noise ratio SNR ; non-invasive monitoring; morphological changes; Gastrectomized Sprague-Dawley; osteoporosis; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The use of Computerised microtomography (CμT) in biomedical research is well established, with most applications developed at synchrotron facilities. The possibility to non-invasively monitor morphological changes in biological samples, makes it an attractive technique in biomedicine. READ MORE

  2. 2. Who ate whom? Paleoecology revealed through synchrotron microtomography of coprolites (fossil feces)

    Author : Martin Qvarnström; Živilė Žigaitė; Grzegorz Niedźwiedzki; Per Ahlberg; Karen Chin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coprolites; paleoecology; synchrotron microtomography; taphonomy; Triassic; Biologi; Biology;

    Abstract : Fossil droppings, known as coprolites, are being increasingly recognized as a valuable source of paleoecological information with special regard to diets, parasitism, and physiology of extinct taxa. Here, it is suggested that the excellent preservation and amount of inclusions in the coprolites (e.g. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cross-modal Imaging in Lung Research: From µCT dosimetry to synchrotron phase contrast microtomography biomechanical insights in preclinical lung injury models

    Author : Richard Deyhle Jr; Malmö Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []

    Abstract : Lung diseases continue to present a large burden to public health, especially in industrialized countries. For abetter understanding of the underlying patho-mechanisms in lung related diseases as well as for testing theefficacy of novel therapies, preclinical studies in animal models are indispensable. 4. 4. Novel approaches to the environments and ecosystems of the fish-tetrapod transition

    Author : Hannah Byrne; Per Ahlberg; Grzegorz Niedzwiedzki; Henning Blom; Benjamin P. Kear; Matt Friedman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fish-tetrapod transition; synchrotron scanning; tides; coprolites; Carboniferous;

    Abstract : The fish-tetrapod transition is one of the most important evolutionary events in Earth’s history, giving rise to terrestrial vertebrates around 390 million years ago. It set the stage for a series of evolutionary events that ultimately resulted in modern-day terrestrial vertebrates including ourselves. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Origin of Tooth Replacement : Three-dimensional Synchrotron Histology Visualizes the Dental Development of Silurian Stem Osteichthyans

    Author : Donglei Chen; Per Ahlberg; Zerina Johanson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Mechanisms of tooth replacement distribute incongruently among extant gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates): a permanent tooth-generating dental lamina exists in chondrichthyans (cartilaginous fish) and tetrapods but not teleosts, whereas tooth shedding by basal hard tissue resorption occurs in tetrapods and teleosts but not chondrichthyans. Theories about the evolution of tooth development have been biased towards the chondrichthyan conveyor-belt replacement, since there has been no fossil evidence for the origin of osteichthyan (bony fish and tetrapods) tooth replacement until now.
