  1. 6. The Dawn of a New Age : Interrelationships of Acoela and Nemertodermatida and the Early Evolution of Bilateria

    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acoela; Nemertodermatida; Bilateria; Metazoa; evolution; phylogenetic inferrence; ancestral reconstruction; taxon sampling; microRNA; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Abstract : Deciphering the rapid emergence of bilaterian animals around the time of the Cambrian Explosion and reconstructing the interrelationships of animal groups have long been two of the most elusive problems in Zoology. This thesis concerns the phylogenetic interrelationships within and among Acoela and Nemertodermatida, two groups of small worms that are believed to be basal bilaterians and which may provide important clues for understanding the early evolution of animals. 2. 7. Ecology and Control of Triatomine (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Vectors of Chagas Disease in Guatemala, Central America

    Author : Maria Carlota Monroy; Thomas G.T. Jaenson; Chris Curtis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Chagas disease; control; epidemiology; ecology; Triatoma dimidiata; T. nitida; T. ryckmani; Rhodnius prolixus; serology; populations movements; geographic distribution.; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis analyses several factors affecting the control of triatomines in Guatemala. There are three synantropic triatomines in Guatemala, i.e., Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma dimidiata and T. READ MORE

  3. 8. Bayesian Phylogenetics and the Evolution of Gall Wasps

    Author : Johan A. A. Nylander; Fredrik Ronquist; Sydney A. Cameron; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Bayesian analysis; Bayes factors; Cynipidae; gall wasps; MCMC; model averaging; model selection; phylogeny; total evidence; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of the gall-inducing wasps belonging to the family Cynipidae. Several previous studies have used morphological data to reconstruct the evolution of the family. READ MORE

  4. 9. Plant-Derived Chemicals as Tick Repellents

    Author : Samira Sadek Garboui; Thomas Jaenson; Katinka Pålsson; Raimondas Mozuraitis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ixodes ricinus; plants; essential oils; tick repellent; Sweden; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Ixodes ricinus is the main vector of Lyme borreliosis and Tick-borne encephalitis in Europe. Repellents provide a practical means of protection against tick bites and can therefore reduce transmission of tick-borne diseases. READ MORE

  5. 10. Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Childia (Acoela) : New characters for unraveling acoel phylogenies from molecules, ultrastructure, immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy

    Author : Yonas Isaak Tekle; Ulf Jondelius; Mikael Thollesson; Isabel Sanmartin; Kennet Lundin; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis presents a comprehensive phylogenetic and taxonomic study of an acoel subgroup, the Childiidae. Members of this taxon are characterized by well-developed male copulatory organs with conical/cylindrical stylets. READ MORE
