1. Ecosystem processes and biodiversity : theoretical studies and experiments with an aquatic model ecosystem
Abstract : Today, human enterprise has implications for all of nature, from the well being of the smallest organism, to the alteration of global biogeochemical cycles. To understand how major ecosystem processes are affected by environmental changes and decreasing biodiversity is crucial as many of natures services depend of such processes. READ MORE

2. Nutrient limitation and elemental ratios in Baltic Sea plankton
Abstract : Phytoplankton growth is frequently limited by the supply of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or sometimes other elements. N2-fixing cyanobacteria are favoured by N limitation, which they may alleviate by adding new N to the ecosystem. READ MORE

3. Local institutions, biological conservation and management of ecosystem dynamics
Abstract : This thesis analyze local institutions and management practices related to natural resources and ecosystem dynamics, with an emphasis on "traditional ecological knowledge" systems. Papers I, II and III analyze ‘resource and habitat taboos’ (RHTs) with the objective to synthesize knowledge about informal institutions behind resource management. READ MORE

4. Coping with environmental stress : from the individual and population perspective
Abstract : Natural stress and disturbances are important factors affecting the structure and function of ecosystems. However the magnitude of stress has escalated due to anthropogenic activities. Environmental monitoring and toxicity assessments try to protect ecosystems from unwanted human alterations. READ MORE

5. Mysid growth, stable isotope fractionation, and energetics : implications for food web studies
Abstract : Field data, stable isotope analyses of the Baltic Sea food web structure, and experimental studies of the functional response indicate that theomnivorous crustacean Mysis mixta (Crustacea, Mysidacea) has no distinct trophic position, but can potentially affect plankton communitystructure and compete with herring and sprat for the zooplankton. Toevaluate field data on mysid body constituents, abundance and populationstructure, and that of their potentialprey, basic knowledge of feeding behaviour, growth mechanisms, andreproductive capabilities are required.
