  1. 1. Immunological mechanisms in systemic autoimmunity : autoantibodies and chemokines in systemic lupus erythematosus and during treatment with TNF inhibitors in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Catharina Eriksson; Karl-Gösta Sundqvist; Solbritt Rantapää-Dahlqvist; Mari Norgren; Thomas Skogh; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Background. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that, without powerful treatment, may lead to irreversible joint damage. During the past decade, anti-cytokine therapy has become available, e.g. READ MORE

  2. 2. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects

    Author : Grethe Neumann Andersen; Solbritt Rantapää Dahlqvist; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Sören Jacobsen; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 3. 3. Effect of thimerosal on the murine immune system : especially induction of systemic autoimmunity

    Author : Said Havarinasab; Per Hultman; Klas Nordlind; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; thimerosal; ethylmercury; autoimmunity; mice; immunosuppression; Th1; Th2; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : The organic mercury compound ethylmercurithiosalicylate (thimerosal), an antiseptic and a preservative, has recently raised public health concern due to its presence in vaccines globally. Thimerosal dissociates in the body to thiosalicylate and ethyl mercury (EtHg), which is partly converted to inorganic mercuric mercury (Hg2+). READ MORE

  4. 4. Mercury-induced autoimmunity : Genetics and immunoregulation

    Author : Monika Hansson; Manuchehr Abedi-Valugerdi; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Lucette Pelletier; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : The existence of immune self-tolerance allows the immune system to mount responses against infectious agents, but not against self-molecular constitutes. Although self-tolerance is a robust phenomenon, in some individuals as well as in experimental models, the self-tolerance breaks down and as a result, a self-destructive autoimmune disease emerges. 5. 5. On the immunopathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus - Immune complexes, type I interferon system, complement system and platelets

    Author : Christian Lood; Reumatologi och molekylär skelettbiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; systemic lupus erythematosus; autoimmunity; rheumatology; immunology; cardiovascular disease;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune rheumatic disorder characterized by inflammation in several organ systems. SLE patients have an impaired ability to clear dying cells which leads to the exposure of several nuclear antigens which might break self tolerance. READ MORE
