21. Studies of atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus
Abstract : The role of inflammation in the development of atherosclerosis is now accepted and a focus of many studies because of its complex mechanisms. The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and atherosclerosis is reported to be increased in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), especially in the group of young women. READ MORE

22. Biomarkers and mediators in systemic lupus erythematosus : IFNα versus the CRP response, and evaluation of suPAR and anti-dsDNA antibody assays
Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease which may affect multiple organ systems. Interferon alpha (IFNα) and autoantibodies that form immune complexes with nuclear antigens (ANA) are hallmarks believed to drive the disease into a vicious circle of inflammation, tissue damage, autoantigen exposure and autoantibody production. 23. Patients’ experiences and patient-reported outcome measures in systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe experiences of persons with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis (SSc), with a focus on functioningand health, and to evaluate patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).Methods The Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), measuring fatigue and its consequences in SLE, was translated into Swedish and tested for aspects of reliability and validity (study I). 24. Autoantibodies and the Type I Interferon System in the Etiopathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Abstract : In sera remitted for anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) analysis, the supplement of a sensitive anti-SSA/Ro ELISA to the conventional ANA screening by immunofluorescence (IF) revealed that one fourth of the individuals with IF-ANA negative, but SSA/Ro ELISA positive sera, had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or cutaneous LE. Consequently, adding a sensitive anti-SSA/Ro ELISA to the ANA screening is valuable for the serological detection of ANA negative SLE/LE patients. READ MORE

25. The Role of Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells and Natural Killer Cells in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibody production, which can eventually lead to immune complex (IC)-mediated organ damage. Due to the stimulation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) by nucleic acid-containing ICs (DNA- or RNA-IC), patients with SLE have an ongoing interferon (IFN)-α production. READ MORE
