  1. 1. LIVING WITH PARASITES: AVIAN MALARIA, TELOMERE LENGTH AND LIFE HISTORY TRADE-OFFS

    Author : Asghar Muhammad; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Avian malaria; Plasmodium; qPCR; parasitemia; life history; reproduction; survival; feather growth; MHC; telomere length; heritability; telomere loss; fitness; wild population; Acrocephalus arundinaceus; Delichon urbica;

    Abstract : Haemosporidia is a well-studied group of parasites, which infect mammals, reptiles and birds and use blood sucking vectors for their transmission. By conducting natural population studies and experimental infections, We have been able to detect and quantify Haemosporidia from avian blood to investigate how these pathogens affect their avian hosts. 2. 2. Causes and Consequences of Early-life Conditions : Alcohol, Pollution and Parental Leave Policies

    Author : Jenny Jans; J. Peter Nilsson; Per Johansson; Arizo Karimi; Matthew Neidell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Air pollution; alcohol availability; parental leave policies; health; educational attainment; earnings; time investments; child outcomes; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : Essay I: This paper studies the effect of air pollution on infant health in Sweden. Combining register panel data on birth outcomes and family characteristics with pollution data, I estimate the effect of particulate matter (PM10) on several birth outcomes that previously have been shown to be predictive of future outcomes. 3. 3. Controlling Structure and Water Miscibility of Polyion - Surfactant Ion Complex Salts

    Author : Jens Norrman; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; phase diagram; cubic Pm3n; hexagonal; lamellar; self diffusion; PFG NMR; SAXS; liquid crystals; polymer; counterion; complex; polyelectrolyte; surfactant;

    Abstract : The interaction between poylions and oppositely charged surfactant ions has been investigated. This has been done by using the pure complex salt (polyion + surfactant ion) as a point of departure. Different parameters of the complex salt have been varied in a systematic way and the effect on structure and water miscibility has been investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Complexation between hydrophobically modified polymers and amylose. Gelation and competition by surfactants

    Author : Monica Egermayer; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; rheology; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; inclusion complex; amylose; surfactant; ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose; hydrophobically modified polymer; hydroxyethyl cellulose;

    Abstract : Aqueous mixtures of hydrophobically modified polymers (HMP) with amylose have been investigated by rheology and 1H NMR. Amylose can cross-link HMP chains by forming single-helical inclusion complexes with the hydrophobic side chains of the HMP, leading to thermoreversible, elastic, and thixotropic gels at ambient temperatures. 5. 5. Dispersing Carbon Nanotubes: Towards Molecular Understanding

    Author : Ricardo M. Ferreira Fernandes; Istvan Furo; Eduardo Marques; Philippe Poulin; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon nanotubes; dispersion; surfactants; polymers; adsorption; liquid crystals; nuclear magnetic resonance; self-diffusion; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit unique and fascinating intrinsic electrical, optical, thermal or mechanical properties that lead to a plethora of potential applications in composite materials, electronics, energy storage, medicine, among others. However, the manipulation of nanotubes is not trivial and there are significant difficulties to overcome before achieving their full potential in applications. READ MORE
