  1. 1. Studies on the pH gradient in normal and ichthyotic human skin

    Author : Hans Öhman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : keratinization; hyperkeratosis; desquamation; filaggrin; cholesterolsulfate; tape stripping; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : In search for pathogenetic mechanisms underlying hyperkeratosis, we examined the pH gradient across the stratum corneum in normal and ichthyotic skin. Twenty students and employees, (12 men and 8 womenaged 25-69 years) served as controls. Patients with ichthyoses were recruited from the outpatient clinic (13 men aged 12-71 years). READ MORE

  2. 2. Large organic aerosols in a human exposure chamber : applications in occupational dermatology and lung medicine

    Author : Lennart Lundgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Aerosol; bakery dust; bronchoalveolar lavage; chamber design; dermal exposure; exposure chamber; inhalation; large organic aerosols; mannequin; neutralizer; particle size; pinewood dust; skin;

    Abstract : Exposure to large organic aerosol particles may cause respiratory and skin reactions. The use of human exposure chambers offers possibilities for experimental exposure challenges carried out with patients, in research and for investigations of the effects of exposure on the skin and in the respiratory tract. 3. 3. Occupational exposure during production of wood pellets in Sweden

    Author : Katja Hagström; Kåre Eriksson; Gunilla Lindström; Paul Demers; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Occupational hygiene; wood dust; resin acids; VOC; variability; determinant of exposure; overexposure; dermal exposure; Occupational medicine; Yrkesmedicin; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The aims of the studies underlying this thesis were to assess workers’ air exposure to wood dust and various chemicals, and to evaluate the variability in exposure and occupational dermal exposure to resin acids during the production of wood pellets in Sweden. Personal air measurements of wood dust, monoterpenes, resin acids and nitrogen dioxide (as a marker of diesel exhaust), accompanied by area measurements of these substances, VOCs and carbon monoxide, were performed at up to ten plants. 4. 4. On Fusidic Acid Resistance in Staphylococcus Aureus

    Author : Tobias Norström; Diarmaid P. Hughes; Bruce R. Levin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Microbiology; S. aureus; SCV; fusidic acid; FusE; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Controlling bacterial infections with antibiotics is central to modern health care. However, increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics threatens effective therapy. This thesis concerns the use of the antibiotic fusidic acid, and novel analogues of fusidic acid, to treat topical infections caused by the bacterial pathogen Staphylococcu aureus. READ MORE

  5. 5. Experimental and Clinical Studies on Contact Allergy to Diphenylmethane-4,4′-diisocyanate and Related Substances

    Author : Haneen Hamada; Yrkes- och miljödermatologi; []
    Keywords : 4; 4′-MDI; freund s complete adjuvant; Guinea pig maximization test; 4; 4 -MDA; 4; 4 -DMDA; 4; 4 -DMDI; PPD; p-phenylenediamine; 2; 4-TDI; Toluene diisocyanate; trimer; FCA; Cross-reactivity; dermal uptake; contact allergy; contact dermatitis;

    Abstract : The exposure to isocyanates is more of an occupational problem than a consumer problem. The main route of exposure is assumed to be through inhalation. Isocyanates that have high vapor pressure, such as TDI, can be airborne at room temperature. Other isocyanates such as MDI are volatile only when heated. READ MORE
