  1. 6. Biomarkers as Monitors of Drug Effect, Diagnostic Tools and Predictors of Deterioration Rate in Alzheimer’s Disease

    Author : Malin Degerman Gunnarsson; Lena Kilander; Hans Basun; Jan Marcusson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; biomarkers; CSF; PIB PET; amyloid-beta; tau; rapid cognitive decline; dying in severe dementia; mortality; neuropsychological tests; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Decreased amyloid-ß42 (Aß42), increased total tau (t-tau) and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reflect histopathological core changes in the most common dementia disorder, Alzheimer’s disease (AD). They discriminate AD from healthy controls and predict conversion to AD with a relatively high accuracy. READ MORE

  2. 7. A stargazer's guide to neurodegeneration : Astrocytes' role in the propagation of pathological proteins

    Author : Tobias Mothes; Anna Erlandsson; Martin Ingelsson; Linn Streubel-Gallasch; Maria Grazia Spillantini; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Alzheimer’s disease; Parkinson’s disease; tauopathies; astrocyte; microglia; neuron; tau; amyloid-β; α-synuclein; accumulation; degradation; inflammation; spreading; seeding.; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are characterized by brain accumulation of pathogenic protein aggregates. In the AD brain, amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau form plaques respective tangles, while in the PD brain α-synuclein (α-syn) form Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. READ MORE

  3. 8. Therapeutic and functional studies in animal models of Alzheimer's disease

    Author : Astrid Gumucio; Lars Nilsson; Richard Cowburn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Amyloid-beta; Immunotherapy; IntelliCage; Microtubule; Tau; Alternative splicing; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi;

    Abstract : Senile plaques (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (tau) are pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). If and how the formation of these deposits are mechanistically linked remains mainly unknown. In recent years, the focus has shifted from insoluble protein deposits to soluble aggregates of Aβ and tau. READ MORE

  4. 9. Short- and long-term consequences of sport-related concussion

    Author : Fredrik Vedung; Niklas Marklund; Gunnar Antoni; Elna-Marie Larsson; Jakob Johansson; Alexander Olsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sport-related concussion; Soccer; Traumatic brain injury; tau; neuroinflammation; cerebral blood flow; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Concussions are common in contact sports. Symptoms such as confusion and/or loss of consciousness following an impact to the head indicate that a sport-related concussion (SRC) has occurred. The symptoms normally resolve within 10-14 days following an SRC in adults although at least 10 % of athletes suffer from prolonged symptoms. READ MORE

  5. 10. Mapping the Huntington's disease process using cerebrospinal fluid analysis

    Author : Valter Niemelä; Anne-Marie Landtblom; Dag Nyholm; Jimmy Sundblom; Edward Wild; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurodegeneration; Huntingtons disease; Neurogenetics; Neuroinflammation; Neurofilament light; tau; Proenkephalin; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Abstract : Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder, caused by a CAG-repeat expansion in the HTT-gene. Today there are no disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), but several promising clinical trials are underway, including therapies that reduce mutant huntingtin expression. READ MORE
