16. Mechanical and Environmental Durability of High Performance Bio-based Composites
Abstract : This study is an initial step within the on-going project on development of high performance bio-based composites with improved mechanical (fatigue) and environmental (elevated humidity and temperature) durability. In the presented thesis the performance of cellulosic fibers (flax and regenerated cellulose), bio-based resins (Tribest, EpoBioX, Palapreg, and Envirez) and their composites under exposure to elevated humidity has been studied. 17. Microfluidic Compartmentalization for Smart Materials, Medical Diagnostics and Cell Therapy
Abstract : The organisation of fluids in small compartments is ubiquitous in nature, such as in the cellular composition of all life. This work explores several engineering avenues where microscale fluid compartmentalization can bring novel material properties or novel functionality in life sciences or medicine. READ MORE

18. Plasmonics with a Twist: from Single Particles to Metasurfaces
Abstract : Nanophotonics deals with how electromagnetic fields can be confined and squeezed to orders of dimensions below the light wavelength. Plasmonics, one of the fields of nanophotonics, study collective free electron oscillations driven by light in metallic nanostructures and interfaces. READ MORE

19. Development of the mineralogical path for geometallurgical modeling of iron ores
Abstract : The demands for more effective utilization of ore bodies and proper risk management in the mining industry have resulted in a new cross discipline called geometallurgy. Geometallurgy connects geological, mineral processing and subsequent downstream processing information together to provide a comprehensive model to be used in production planning and management. 20. Development of high-Tc SQUID magnetometers for on-scalp MEG
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of high critical temperature superconducting quantum interference device (high-Tc SQUID) magnetometers based on bicrystal grain boundary and nanowire junctions for the potential use in on-scalp magnetoencephalography (MEG), which is a new generation MEG technique with reduced sensor-to-subject standoff distances.MEG is a method of mapping neural dynamics in the human brain by recording the magnetic fields produced by neural currents.
