  1. 1. GIS-hydrological modelling in arid lands : a geographical synthesis of surface waters for the African Red Sea region in the Sudan

    University dissertation from Lund University Press

    Author : Badr-Eldin Taha Osman; [1996]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; teknisk geografi; Hydrogeology; geographical and geological engineering; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; runoff.; infiltration; evaporation; rainfall; deterministic and stochastic explanations; weighting methods; hydrological modelling; spatial modelling; GIS; geographical hydrology; the Sudanese Red Sea region; arid lands; water resources;

    Abstract : The magnitude and availability of surface waters in the arid/semi-arid Sudanese Red Sea region has been examined. In conjunction with the research objective, opinions and methodologies applied by previous researchers have been assessed. The study applied a geographical hydrological synthesis within a GIS framework. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation of carbon dioxide emission from Swedish boreal lakes and the Gulf of Bothnia

    University dissertation from Umeå universitet

    Author : Grete Algesten; Umeå universitet.; [2005]

    Abstract : The global carbon cycle is subject to intense research, where sources and sinks for greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide in particular, are estimated for various systems and biomes. Lakes have previously been neglected in carbon balance estimations, but have recently been recognized to be significant net sources of CO2. READ MORE

  4. 4. Diatoms as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden

    University dissertation from Umeå : Ekologi och geovetenskap

    Author : Christian Bigler; Umeå universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; diatoms; Holocene; paleolimnology; climate change; lake sediments; transfer functions; quantitative environmental reconstructions; northern Sweden; Abisko; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Earth sciences Exogenous earth sciences Physical geography; NATURVETENSKAP Geovetenskap Exogen geovetenskap Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : The objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden (Abisko region, 68°21'N, 18°49'E). A modern surface-sediment calibration set including 100 lakes was developed and lake-water pH, sedimentary organic content (assessed by loss-on-ignition) and temperature were identified as most powerful environmental variables explaining the variance within the diatom assemblages. 5. 5. Sandgrunnorna in Lule Archipelago Recent Transformation of a Glaciofluvial Deposit in an Environment of Land Uplift

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Uppsala universitet

    Author : Göran Albjär; Uppsala universitet.; [1985]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In an area of rapid land uplift the geomorphological evolution of the glaciofluvial island of Sandgrunnorna, 25 km SE Luleå, in the Bothnian Bay, is discussed from old maps, air photographs and field studies. The island were marked on a map for the first time in 1790, but the highest parts can be estimated to have reached the sea surface about 100 years earlier. READ MORE
