1. Development of Techniques for Characterization, Detection and Protein Profiling of Extracellular Vesicles
Abstract : Nanosized extracellular vesicles (EVs, ∼30-2000 nm) have emerged as important mediators of intercellular communication, offering opportunities for both diagnostics and therapeutics. In particular, small EVs generated from the endolysosomal pathway (∼30-150 nm), referred to as exosomes, have attracted interest as a suitable biomarker for cancer diagnostics and treatment monitoring based on minimally invasive liquid biopsies. 2. Microfluidic Compartmentalization for Smart Materials, Medical Diagnostics and Cell Therapy
Abstract : The organisation of fluids in small compartments is ubiquitous in nature, such as in the cellular composition of all life. This work explores several engineering avenues where microscale fluid compartmentalization can bring novel material properties or novel functionality in life sciences or medicine. READ MORE

3. Plasmonics with a Twist: from Single Particles to Metasurfaces
Abstract : Nanophotonics deals with how electromagnetic fields can be confined and squeezed to orders of dimensions below the light wavelength. Plasmonics, one of the fields of nanophotonics, study collective free electron oscillations driven by light in metallic nanostructures and interfaces. READ MORE

4. Development of high-Tc SQUID magnetometers for on-scalp MEG
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of high critical temperature superconducting quantum interference device (high-Tc SQUID) magnetometers based on bicrystal grain boundary and nanowire junctions for the potential use in on-scalp magnetoencephalography (MEG), which is a new generation MEG technique with reduced sensor-to-subject standoff distances.MEG is a method of mapping neural dynamics in the human brain by recording the magnetic fields produced by neural currents. 5. Studies of cell-on-chip technology and basophil regulation for improved allergy diagnostics
Abstract : Allergic diseases affect approximately 30% of adults and has an impact on both the individual’s quality of life as well as an economic impact on society. Two effector cells involved in allergic disease are mast cells and basophils, where basophils are more readily available in blood and therefore of great interest when studying allergy. READ MORE
