  1. 21. Distribution and Long-term Effects of the Environmental Neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) : Brain changes and behavioral impairments following developmental exposure

    Author : Oskar Karlsson; Eva Brittebo; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; Erika Roman; Sandra Ceccatelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS PDC; Guam; Developmental neurotoxicity; Brain growth spurt; Behavior; Nonprotein amino acid; Excitotoxic; Cyanobacteria; Apoptosis; BMAA; environmental toxin; Algal blooming; Algblomning; algtoxin; alggift; hjärnutveckling; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Many cyanobacteria are reported to produce the nonprotein amino acid β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). Cyanobacteria are extensively distributed in terrestrial and aquatic environments and recently BMAA was detected in temperate aquatic ecosystems, e.g. the Baltic Sea. READ MORE

  2. 22. Evolutionary patterns and processes of bacteriophages, particularly P2-like phages

    Author : Anders Nilsson; Siv Andersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : DNA sequencing of structural genes of temperate P2-like prophages from isolates of Escherichia coli bacteria showed that the difference between these genes was very small. Separate phylogenetic analyses on the genes resulted in unresolved trees, caused by a high level of homologous recombination, which implied that homologous recombination is the most important source of new genetic variation for P2-like phages infecting E. 3. 23. Impacts and drivers of insect herbivory on element cycling in forests globally

    Author : Bernice Hwang; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biogeochemical cycling; folivory; insect cadavers; insect frass; insect herbivory; litter decomposition; nutrient cycling; carbon; nitrogen; phosphorus; silicon; silica;

    Abstract : The effects of insect herbivores on forest functioning are not well understood even though they can have important impacts on ecosystem processes by intercepting foliage before resorption and depositing nutrient-rich materials to the soil. In this thesis, I investigated the impact and drivers of insect folivores on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silica (Si) cycling in broadleaf forests, and how this varies with major climate variables. 4. 24. Biomass, community structure and phosphorus uptake of ectomycorrhizal fungi in response to phosphorus limitation and nitrogen deposition

    Author : Juan Pablo Almeida; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phosphorus and nitrogen limitation; nitrogen deposition; ectomycorrhizal fungi; community composition; apatite; Paxillus involutus; Phosphorus and nitrogen limitation; nitrogen deposition; ectomycorrhizal fungi; community composition; apatite; Paxillus involutus;

    Abstract : High levels of nitrogen (N) deposition might result in a transition from N to phosphorus (P) limitation in high latitude forests. Thiscould have fundamental consequences for forest production, nutrient acquisition and nutrient leaching. READ MORE

  5. 25. On-farm agrohydrological analysis of the Sahelian yield crisis : rainfall partitioning, soil nutrients and water use efficiency of pearl millet

    Author : Johan Rockström; Jim Wallace; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Natural Resources Management; naturresurshushållning;

    Abstract : Sub-Saharan Africa is presently experiencing a steadily aggravated food security crisis. This crisis is a result of a rapidly growing population combined with insignificant yield increases of the major cereal crops maize, millet and sorghum, during the last decades. READ MORE
