  1. 1. Too Hot! : an Epidemiological Investigation of Weather-Related Mortality in Rural India

    Author : Vijendra Ingole; Barbara Schumann; Joacim Rocklöv; Rainer Sauerborn; Sanjay Juvekar; Patrick Kinney; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Temperature; heat and cold; mortality; education; socioeconomic status; occupation; rural population; India; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : BackgroundMost environmental epidemiological studies are conducted in high income settings. The association between ambient temperature and mortality has been studied worldwide, especially in developed countries. READ MORE

  2. 2. Short-term effects of ambient temperature on daily deaths and hospital admissions

    Author : Joacim Rocklöv; Bertil Forsberg; Jan Semenza; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; temperature; humidity; weather; climate; climate change; hot; heat; cold; cold spell; cold wave; heat wave; health; hospitalization; hospital admission; death; mortality; morbidity; epidemiology; environmental epidemiology; time series; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; Occupational and Environmental Medicine; arbets- och miljömedicin;

    Abstract : Background: Incidence of death and hospitalizations have been observed to depend on short-term changes in weather and to increase with extreme temperatures. This thesis aims to strengthen the scientific knowledge on the relationship between temperature and daily deaths, but also the relationship between temperature and daily hospital admissions. 3. 3. Population ecology of perch (Perca fluviatilis) in boreal lakes

    Author : Arne Linløkken; Eva Bergman; Larry Greenberg; Anders Hargeby; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; perch; growth; size; mortality; temperature; acidification; density; roach; competition; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : I studied the effects of temperature, pH, competition and predation on Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) in 30 lakes in Norway during 1981-2001. The study lakes were situated in two different areas in southern Norway; four lakes in Aust-Agder county in southernmost Norway were explored during 1981-1984 and 26 lakes in Hedmark county in south-eastern Norway were investigated during 1992-2001. 4. 4. Variation in age and size at maturation in two benthic crustaceans in the Gulf of Bothnia

    Author : Kjell Leonardsson; J. Ekman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Age at maturation; alternative prey; Bergmanris rule; cannibalism; growth; life-history theory; mortality; Mvoxocephalus quadricornis; poikilotherm; Pontoporeia affinis; population dynamics; risk- taking behaviour; Saduria entomon; size at maturation; temperature;

    Abstract : The thesis deals with variation in age and size at maturation in Saduria entomon and Pontoporeia affinis along a depth gradient in the Gulf of Bothnia, Sweden. I have analysed at what sizes and ages animals should mature in relation to growth and mortality conditions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Climate change impacts on production and dynamics of fish populations

    Author : Per Hedström; Pär Byström; Jan Karlsson; Peter Eklöv; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Temperature; terrestrial dissolved organic carbon; light extinction; GPP; recruitment; winter mortality; metabolism; cohort competition; fish production; fish biomass;

    Abstract : Ongoing climate change is predicted to increase water temperatures and export of terrestrial dissolved matter (TDOM) to aquatic ecosystems influencing ecosystem productivity, food web dynamics and production of top consumers. Ecosystem productivity is mainly determined by the rates of primary production (GPP) in turn controlled by nutrients, light availability and temperature, while temperature alone affect vital rates like consumption and metabolic rates and maintenance requirements of consumers.
