  1. 1. Use of neural progenitor cell lines and astrocytes for transplantation and gene transfer to the CNS

    Author : Cecilia Lundberg; CNS Genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fimbria-fornix lesion; NGF; tyrosine hydroxylase; Parkinson s disease; integration; differentiation; temperature-sensitive; grafting; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Intracerebral neuronal transplantation have been shown to ameliorate symptoms of brain dysfunction in both animals models and Parkinson's disease, although problems still remain. The newly introduced technique of ex vivo gene transfer could serve as an alternative approach, possible avoiding some of the draw-backs of the embryonal tissue used in neuronal grafting. READ MORE

  2. 2. Physico-Chemical Investigations of Bilayer Discs and Related Lipid Structures Formed in Liposomal Systems Intended for Triggered Release

    Author : Maria Sandström; Katarina Edwards; Mats Almgren; Tommy Nylander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physical chemistry; liposome; triggered release; pH-sensitive liposomes; temperature-sensitive liposomes; drug partitioning; cryo-TEM; discs; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes results from fundamental studies of liposomes intended for drug delivery and pH or temperature triggered release. In addition, the effect of lipid composition on bilayer disc formation and a potential application of the bilayer discs were investigated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Skin-to-skin contact and suckling in early postpartum : effects on temperature, breastfeeding and mother-infant interaction

    Author : Ksenia Bystrova; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Breastfeeding outcome; early suckling; maternal temperature; mother-child interaction; newborn infant temperature; sensitive period; separation; skin-to-skin contact; swaddling.;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the role of closeness versus separation on infant and maternal temperature adaptation, breastfeeding outcome and mother-infant interaction. In addition, we aimed to study a potential influence of swaddling on all outcomes measured. READ MORE

  4. 4. Decomposition of soil organic matter under a changing climate : a matter of efficiency?

    Author : Tobias Bölscher; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Soil organic matter is the largest carbon (C) pool in the terrestrial C cycle, and soil CO₂ emissions surpass anthropogenic emissions from fossil fuel combustion by a factor of nine. Therefore, mechanisms controlling C stabilisation in soils and its feedback to climate change are widely debated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic analysis of genes found on the 4th chromosome of Drosophila - emphasizing the developmental context of Pax6

    Author : Jesper Kronhamn; Åsa Rasmuson-Lestander; Kevin Moses; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; Pax6; twin of eyeless; headless flies; head development; eye development; eyeless; Minute; RpS3A; regulatory region; Drosophila; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : The small size and the lack of recombination set the fourth chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster apart from the other chromosomes. I have shown that the Minute gene on chromosome 4, earlier named Minute-4, encodes the ribosomal protein RpS3A. Two Pax6 genes, eyeless (ey) and twin of eyeless (toy) are also located on chromosome 4. READ MORE
