  1. 21. Modifying kraft pulping to produce a softwood pulp requiring less energy in tissue paper production

    Author : Hafizur Rahman; Per Engstrand; Mikael E. Lindström; Louise Logenius; Peter Sandström; Ulf Germgård; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : Modifying kraft pulp; tissue dewatering; polysulfide; sodium borohydride; tensile index; hemicellulose;

    Abstract : Modification of softwood kraft pulp by the addition of either polysulfide (PS) or sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been shown to increase the pulp yield due to a higher retention of glucomannan.  The pulps with higher yield gave a paper with higher tensile index than reference pulp, especially at lower degrees of refining. 2. 22. Fenton Pre-treatment of a Birch Kraft Pulp for MFC preparation

    Author : Pia Hellström; Helena Håkansson; Anette Heijnesson Hultén; Magnus Paulsson; Monica Ek; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microfibrillated cellulose; Fenton chemistry; carbonyl groups; surface charge; total charge; Enzymatic hydrolysis; Tensile strength; z-directional strength; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The potential to use acidic hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ferrous ions (Fenton’s reagent) as a pre-treatment when producing microfibrillar cellulose (MFC) from a fully bleached birch (Betula verucosa) kraft pulp was investigated and the properties of the produced MFC was compared to the properties of a MFC produced with enzymatic pre-treatment with a monocomponent endoglucanase (FiberCare® R). The mechanical treatment to MFC was performed in a laboratory colloid mill or in a pilot high-pressure homogeniser and the pre-treated pulps as well as the produced MFCs were chemically and morphologically characterised. 3. 23. Biobased and biodegradable binders for paper and nonwoven

    Author : Maria Wennman; Mikael S. Hedenqvist; Anna Justina Svagan; Mårten Hellberg; Wim Thielemans; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polyelectrolyte complex; binder; chitosan; carboxymethyl cellulose; citric acid; nonwoven; tensile strength; hydrophobicity; Polyelektrolytkomplex; bindemedel; kitosan; karboximetylcellulosa; citronsyra; nonwoven; dragstyrka; hydrofobicitet; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : Nonwovens are textile-like materials with similarities close to paper. One significant sector where nonwovens are used is for single-use products such as wet wipes and hygiene products. With an increasing global population, the manufacturing and use of nonwovens have grown significantly. READ MORE

  4. 24. Development of a New Biomechanical ex vivo Perfusion System - Studies on effects of biomechanical and inflammatory stress on hemostatic genes in human vascular endothelium

    Author : Niklas Bergh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ex vivo perfusion system; biomechanical; endothelium; shear stress; tensile stress; pulsatile; TNF-α; JNK; hemostatic genes;

    Abstract : The vascular endothelium is a multifunctional interface constantly exposed to biomechanical forces such as shear and tensile stress. Biomechanical stress is involved in the pathophysiological process of the vessel wall and thus affects vascular remodeling, atherosclerosis and thrombogenesis. READ MORE

  5. 25. Mechanical Properties of Gamma Titanium Aluminides

    Author : Viktor Recina; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microstructure; intermetallic compound; tensile properties; diffusion bonding; sample preparation; low cycle fatigue; fractography; gamma titanium aluminide; mechanical properties;

    Abstract : In recent years intermetallic compounds have attracted a great deal of attention as structural materials. Among the intermetallics, gamma titanium aluminides (.gamma.-TiAl) are considered to be closest to application. READ MORE
