  1. 1. Theoretical and computational advances in small-angle x-ray scattering tensor tomography

    Author : Leonard Nielsen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tensor tomography; reciprocal space map; small-angle scattering;

    Abstract : The relationships between microscopic and macroscopic structures is a central topic of materials physics. Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) is a powerful experimental technique for probing and mapping variations in electron density, given by the reciprocal space map, down to the nanometer scale in two dimensions. 2. 2. Development and application of rule- and learning-based approaches within the scope of neuroimaging : Tensor voting, tractography and machine learning

    Author : Daniel Jörgens; Rodrigo Moreno; Örjan Smedby; Chunliang Wang; Jesper Andersson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tensor voting; tractography; deep learning; tractogram filtering; diffusion magnetic resonance imaging; tensorröstning; traktografi; djupinlärning; traktogramfiltrering; diffusions-MRT; Tillämpad medicinsk teknik; Applied Medical Technology;

    Abstract : The opportunity to non-invasively probe the structure and function of different parts of the human body makes medical imaging an indispensable tool in clinical diagnostics and related fields of research. Especially neuroscientists rely on modalities like structural or functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography or Positron Emission Tomography to study the human brain in vivo. Abstract : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementing disorder. The cortical pathology of AD has been recognized for almost a century. In later years, an associated pathological feature of AD has been identified which affects the white matter. READ MORE

  4. 4. MRI at 3 T of brain functions and fibre tracts adjacent to intracranial tumors

    Author : Danielle van Westen; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiology; tomography; Clinical physics; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; somatosensory cortex; diffusion magnetic resonance imaging; neoplasms; Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging;

    Abstract : The aims of the studies were: to evaluate the spatial resolution of fMRI at 3 T by studying fingersomatotopy in area 3 b of the primary sensory area (Paper 1); to investigate the potential of fMRI at 3T as a clinical tool for preoperative evaluation of patients with intracranial tumors (Paper 2); to investigate the effect of glioma resection on the spatial extent of fMRI activation as compared to the normal within-subject variability (Paper 3); to determine whether the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) can distinguish tumor-infiltrated edema of gliomas from pure edema of meningiomas and metastases (Paper 4). Results: Strict somatotopic organisation in the primary sensory cortex was shown in the group average; at the subject level the thumb was located laterally, anteriorly and inferiorly to the little finger in 94 % of subjects (Paper 1). 5. 5. Synchrotron-based characterization of mechanobiological effects on the nanoscale in musculoskeletal tissues

    Author : Isabella Silva Barreto; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nanoscale; microscale; mechanical properties; synchrotron; x-ray imaging; collagen; hydroxyapatite; biomechanics; experimental mechanics; x-ray tomography; small-angle x-ray scattering SAXS ; wide-angle x-ray scattering WAXS ; x-ray fluorescence XRF ; small-angle x-ray scattering tensor tomography SASTT ; Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR ; polarized light microscopy PLM ; bone development; Achilles tendon; tendon healing;

    Abstract : Collagen is the main organic building block of musculoskeletal tissues. Despite collagen being their smallest load bearing unit, these tissues differ significantly in mechanical function and properties. A major factor behind these differences is their hierarchical organization, from the collagen molecule up to the organ scale. READ MORE
