  1. 1. Analysing the transient operation of the boiler and the TES tank for improving the flexibility in biomass CHP

    Author : Milan Zlatkovikj; Hailong Li; Lei Feng; Mälardalens universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; flexibility; combined heat and power CHP ; boiler; thermal energy storage TES ; feed-forward model predictive control FF MPC ; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik;

    Abstract : The uncertainty in the energy systems due to the continuously growing share of variable renewable energy sources (VRES) increases the requirements for flexibility. From the multiple mechanisms to improve flexibility, biomass-fired combined heat and power plants (CHPs) have gained attention due to their sustainability and high efficiency. READ MORE

  2. 2. Phase Equilibrium-aided Design of Phase Change Materials from Blends : For Thermal Energy Storage

    Author : Saman Nimali Gunasekara; Viktoria Martin; Justin NingWei Chiu; Torsten Fransson; Ana Ines Fernandez; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; thermal energy storage TES ; phase change material PCM ; phase diagram; congruent melting; compound; solid solution; eutectic; peritectic; Energy Technology; Energiteknik; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materials Science and Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Climate change is no longer imminent but eminent. To combat climate change, effective, efficient and smart energy use is imperative. Thermal energy storage (TES) with phase change materials (PCMs) is one attractive choice to realize this. READ MORE

  3. 3. Alloys in Contact with Molten Salts for Thermal Storage Applications

    Author : Esraa Hamdy Mohamedin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Phase transition; Molten salts; High-temperature corrosion; Alumina-forming alloys; Carburisation; Thermal energy storage TES ; Laves phase; Concentrated solar power CSP ;

    Abstract : The combination of a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant and a thermal energy storage (TES) system is a promising technology for power generation, in that it overcomes the challenges commonly faced by renewable energy systems, such as intermittency, dispatchability, and the gap between the energy supply and energy demand. The third generation (Gen3) CSP plants are designed to increase plant efficiency by using supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) instead of steam for the Brayton cycle gas turbines, requiring a minimum operating temperature of 750°C for the TES materials. 4. 4. Preparation and performance of energy storage materials and application for recovery of industrial waste heat

    Author : Weilong Wang; Jinyue Yan; Fredrik Setterwall; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Phase change materials; Polyethylene glycol; Silicon dioxide; Form-stable; Thermal conductivity; Expanded graphite; Industrial heat; M-TES; ; Chemical energy engineering; Kemisk energiteknik;

    Abstract : Due to the rapid increase of energy consumption and the environmental concerns on climate change caused by the fossil fuel combustion, it becomes a big issue on how to use alternative renewable energy resources to replace fossil fuel and to improve energy utilization efficiency. In Sweden, there are plenty of detached buildings without connection with district heating (DH) network, which use oil to supply the hot water for space heating and tap water. READ MORE

  5. 5. Energy Efficiency through Thermal Energy Storage : Possibilities for the Swedish Building Stock

    Author : Johan Heier; Viktoria Martin; Chris Bales; Signhild Gehlin; Högskolan Dalarna; []

    Abstract : The need for heating and cooling in buildings constitutes a considerable part of the total energy use in a country and reducing this need is of outmost importance in order to reach national and international goals for reducing energy use and emissions. One important way of reaching these goals is to increase the proportion of renewable energy used for heating and cooling of buildings. READ MORE
