  1. 1. Regulation of mitochondrial transcription and mtDNA copy number in mammals

    Author : Anja Rantanen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : mtDNA; transcription factor; evolution; transmission; inheritance; expression; mitochondria; transgenic; mapping; testis-specific;

    Abstract : Functional mitochondria are essential for wellbeing of the cell and the whole organism. Gene expression from the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) is indispensable for oxidative phosphorylation, but also for the replication of mtDNA, as the replication primers are processed from mtDNA transcripts. 2. 2. Hormone-Sensitive Lipase and Protein Kinase B; Molecular characterization in testis, adipose tissue and pancreatic beta cells

    Author : Lena Stenson; Signaltransduktionsforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; signal transduction; pancreas; beta cells; adipocyte; insulin; Akt; protein kinase B; spermatogenesis; cholesterol esterase; hormone-sensitive lipase; testis; cAMP; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; enzymologi;

    Abstract : Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and protein kinase B (PKB) are enzymes that in different ways are associated with lipid metabolism. While HSL is the well-known lipolytic enzyme responsible for hydrolysis of stored triacylglycerols in adipose tissue, PKB is a recently identified serine/threonine protein kinase, ubiquitously expressed and involved in signal transduction pathways induced by insulin and growth factors. 3. 3. Transcriptomic and Proteomic Analysis of Tumor Markers in Tissue and Blood from Patients with Lung Cancer

    Author : Dijana Djureinovic; Patrick Micke; Keith Kerr; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : non-small cell lung cancer; prognostic biomarkers; cancer-testis antigens; prediction model; tumor markers; autoantibodies; testis; screening; Patologi; Pathology;

    Abstract : Despite recent treatment advancements, the survival outcome remains poor for the majority of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The aim of this thesis was to evaluate protein expression to predict prognosis and identify biomarkers that can be used as targets for immunotherapy or for early detection of NSCLC. READ MORE

  4. 4. Thioredoxins and gene regulation in the Drosophila germline

    Author : Malin J. Svensson; Jan Larsson; David Roberts; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila; thioredoxin; sex-specific; Pof; chromosome 4; gene regulation; kromosom 4; genreglering; Drosophila; thioredoxin; könsspecifik; Pof; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Spermatogenesen är i många organismer en av de mest dramatiska förvandlingar som en cell kan genomgå – en vanlig, rund, diploid cell omvandlas till en nålformad, haploid cell med ett tätt packat cellmaskineri. I bananfluga, Drosophila melanogaster, innebär denna process flera karaktäristiska stadier. READ MORE

  5. 5. Type 2 Cystatins. Studies on the role of the major cystatin, cystatin C, in mice and on properties and distribution of the novel human cystatins F, G, H and I

    Author : Carl-Michael Nathanson; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; enzyme kinetics; eosinophilic granulocytes; expression pattern; pleural effusion; knockout mouse; Cysteine peptidase; cystatin;

    Abstract : The aim the thesis work was to study the human cystatins C, E/M, F, G, H and I both in vivo and in vitro. A mouse devoid of cystatin C was used for the cystatin C studies. The levels of cystatins C, E/M and F were measured in pleural effusion samples of patients with various lung disorders. READ MORE
