  1. 1. Tryptophan-related Neurotransmission in the Brain: Disturbances Associated with Experimental Hepatic Encephalopathy

    Author : Peter B F Bergqvist; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tetrodotoxin; serotonin; release; rat; quinolinic acid; potassium; chloroamphetamine; noradrenaline; neurotransmission; microdialysis; hepatic encephalopathy; fenfluramine; drug safety; dopamine; coma; citalopram; ammonia; calcium; brain; tryptophan; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi;

    Abstract : In the present study, L-tryptophan (TRP)-related disturbances in the brain in experimental hepatic encephalopathy (HE) were investigated. The endogenous NMDA-receptor agonist and L-TRP metabolite quinolinic acid (QUIN) has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of HE. READ MORE

  2. 2. Regulation of spontaneous tone in guinea pig trachea

    Author : Staffan Skogvall; Neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tetrodotoxin; lidocaine; substance P; tachykinin; prostaglandin; indomethacin; capsaicin; neuroepithelial endocrine cells; epithelium; oxygen; oscillations; spontaneous tone; Asthma; airway smooth muscle; electrical field stimulation.; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : Asthma is a common disease, characterized by periods of bronchoconstriction of unclear origin. This thesis examines a specific behavior of airway smooth muscle, the so-called spontaneous airway tone. It was suspected that a defect regulation of this tone may be a cause of asthmatic bronchoconstriction. READ MORE

  3. 3. The interplay of ions in the stimulation of the pancreatic -cell

    Author : Michael Eberhardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; pancreatic β-cells; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; glucose; tetrodotoxin; tolbutamide; veratridine; tetraethylammonium; quinine; cesium; H2DIDS; furosemide; transients; microfluorometry; fura-2; MQAE; calcium channels; potassium channels; sodium channels; chloride channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Glucose stimulation of insulin release is mediated by depolarisation of the pancreatic β-cells with accompanying entry of Ca2+ through voltage-dependent channels. An important feature of the glucose-induced depolarisation is its rhythmicity causing oscillations of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), which trigger pulsatile release of insulin. 4. 4. Presynaptic mechanisms in L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia

    Author : Hanna Lindgren; Basala gangliernas patofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; angiogenesis; dyskinesia; 5-HT; DA; Parkinson s disease; 6-OHDA; microdialysis;

    Abstract : This study has investigated the impact of presynaptic factors on the development of dyskinesia during chronic L-DOPA treatment in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The mechanisms causing dyskinesia are not completely understood but have been proposed to involve changes in gene and protein expression in striatal neurons, which are the main target of dopamine (DA) projections from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). 5. 5. Functional studies of purinergic and cholinergic interactions in the rat urinary bladder - Characterization of ATP-evoked urothelial release of acetylcholine

    Author : Johanna Stenqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ATP; acetylcholine; urothelium; caveolae; afferents; cystitis;

    Abstract : Functional interplays between different transmitter systems are known to affect the signalling of the micturition reflex arc. The functional implications of many of these interactions, such as between ATP and acetylcholine, have yet to be unravelled. READ MORE
