  1. 1. Relation of nutritional status, immunity, hemoglobinopathy and falciparum malaria infection

    Author : Alice Nyakeriga; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Thomas Williams; Clara Menendez; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Iron deficiency; nutrition; anthropometric indexes; malaria; hemoglobinopathies; immunity; Immunology; Immunologi;

    Abstract : The interaction between nutritional status and malaria disease is complex and often controversial. Nutritional deficiencies (macro- or micro-nutrient) are thought to lead to malnutrition with subsequent susceptibility to malaria infection. On the other hand severe malaria or repeated malaria infections lead to malnutrition. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies of Thai blood group and platelet polymorphism. Implications for malaria susceptibility

    Author : Philaiphon Jongruamklang; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Thai; Blood group polymorphism; Human platelet antigens; Malaria susceptibility; Plasmodium falciparum;

    Abstract : The objectives of the thesis were to seek a better understanding of polymorphic RBC surface molecules in the Thai, and to investigate the role of certain blood groups in malarial invasion. MALDI-TOF MS was employed in Study I as an efficient method for genotyping to establish the common blood group and platelet antigen genotypes of 396 blood donors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Optimization of the formulation and design of oligonucleotide-based pharmaceuticals for the purpose of gene therapy

    Author : Eman M Zaghloul; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Oligonucleotides (ONs) are short sequences of nucleic acids which may be used in a therapeutic context to modulate gene expression. According to their target, ONs can be classified into two main classes: antisense ONs which target mRNA and antigene ONs that target chromosomal DNA. READ MORE

  4. 4. Oligomerization of human and bacterial frataxin : Structural and functional studies

    Author : Mostafa Abdalkhalik; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : Frataxin; Friedreich’s ataxia; iron; reactive oxiden species; protein oligomerization; SAXS; EM; cross-linking; XAFS; nano- DSF;

    Abstract : Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by defeciency in frataxin, a highly conserved protein central to iron homeostasis in mirochondria. The function of frataxin is related to its capability to bind, store and deliver iron to different biochemical process such as iron-sulfur cluster assembly and heme biosynthesis. READ MORE
