  1. 1. Rock Mechanical Consequences of Refrigeration. A Study Based on a Pilot Scale Rock Cavern

    Author : Lars-Olof Dahlström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; temperature decrease; tensile strength; thermomechanical loading; compressive strength; Poisson s ratio; thermal contraction; rock caverns; rock mass deformation; Young s modulus;

    Abstract : The deformation of a rock mass due to temperature decrease below freezing is very complex, since many factors are involved; thermal strain, strain due to stress change, stress re-distribution, ice formation and the temperature dependency of rock mechanical and thermo-physical properties. The objective of this study was to achieve a better understanding of the rock mass response to thermo-mechanical loading when storing low temperature products in rock caverns excavated in hard crystalline rock masses. 2. 2. Analysis, Simulation and Cryogenic/Mechanical Design for ALMA Band 5 Cartridge

    Author : Magnus Strandberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mechanical stress; ALMA frontend; thermal contraction.; receiver cartridge; cryogenics;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis describes the work conducted by the author during the development of the ALMA Band 5 cartridge. The ALMA project as an international collaboration between various continents consisting of 66 antennas in total with ten ALMA receivers that observes in the range from 31 GHz and 950 GHz. READ MORE

  3. 3. The mechanisms controlling heat and mass transfer on frying of beefburgers

    Author : Bea Kovácsné Oroszvári; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; permeability; porosity; contraction; frying; beefburger; heat and mass transfer;

    Abstract : The aim of the present work was to gain better understanding of the mechanisms controlling heat and mass transfer during thermal processing of beefburgers. The effects of different factors such as the chemical composition and comminution of the meat raw material, the pan temperature and the meat patty diameter on the characteristics of heat and mass transfer were studied. 4. 4. Thermal crack estimation in early age concrete : models and methods for practical application

    Author : Mårten Larson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Structural Engineering; Konstruktionsteknik;

    Abstract : Control of thermal cracking in young concrete is of great importance to ensure a desired service life time and function of a structure. Making reliable thermal stress estimations, and thereby conclusions about cracking risks, involves advanced modelling of material properties and structural restraint. READ MORE

  5. 5. Thermally Induced Fracture Performance of Asphalt Mixtures

    Author : Prabir Kumar Das; Björn Birgisson; Dallas Little; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Low temperature cracking; asphalt concrete fracture mechanics; viscoelasticity; non-linear thermal contraction coefficient; atomic force microscopy; wax; wax crystallization; SRA - Transport; SRA - Transport;

    Abstract : A major distress mode in asphalt pavements is low temperature cracking, which results from the contraction and expansion of the asphalt pavement under extreme temperature changes. The potential for low temperature cracking is an interplay between the environment, the road structure and importantly the properties of the asphalt mixture. READ MORE
