  1. 1. Principles and Models of Solid Fuel Combustion

    Author : Henrik Thunman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood; single particle; modelling; fluidized bed; thermochemical conversion; fixed bed; coal; thermal conductivity; fuel loading; measurements; thermochemical properties; biofuels; combustion; grate;

    Abstract : Combustion of solid fuels stands for a substantial part of the heat and power production in the world. In this thesis different aspects related to the thermochemical conversion of solid fuels in fluidized and fixed beds are treated, such as: the combustion temperature of a fuel particle related to the surrounding temperature in a fluidized bed combustor (FBC); the fuel loading in a FBC; a transient description of the conversion of non-spherical fuel particles; the thermochemical properties and composition of volatiles released from wood; the thermal conductivity of wood during different stages of conversion; the modelling of a grate furnace; the general combustion behaviour of a fixed bed on a reciprocating or a travelling grate; and finally, the design and construction of experimental units for investigation of combustion in a fixed bed. 2. 2. Micro-reaction Mechanism Study of the Biomass Thermal Conversion Process using Density Functional Theory

    Author : Xiaolei Zhang; Weihong Yang; Linda J. Broadbelt; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biomass thermal conversion; cellulose pyrolysis; char steam gasification; adsorption; interaction; mechanism; quantum chemistry; density functional theory;

    Abstract : Biomass, or bio-energy, is one of the most important alternative energies because of environmental concerns and the future shortage of fossil fuels. Multi-scaled bioenergy studies have been performed in the division of Energy and Furnace Technology, which included studies of macroscopic systems such as systems and reactors, modeling of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and atomic/molecular level studies. 3. 3. Gasification and Pyrolysis Characterization and Heat Transfer Phenomena During Thermal Conversion of Municipal Solid Waste

    Author : Chunguang Zhou; Weihong Yang; Wlodzimierz Blasiak; Petr Stehlik; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; municipal solid waste; pyrolysis; gasification; heat transfer; CaO; CO2; reforming; numerical model; Energy Technology; Energiteknik; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The significant generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) has become a controversial global issue. Pyrolysis and gasification technologies for treating rejects from solid waste disposal sites (SWDSs), for which over 50 % of MSW is attributed to combustible species, have attracted considerable attention. 4. 4. Ash Behavior in Fluidized-Bed Combustion and Gasification of Biomass and Waste Fuels : Experimental and Modeling Approach

    Author : Farzad Moradian; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fluidized-bed; combustion; gasification; waste-derived fuels; biomass; ash-related problems; deposit; fouling; slagging; bed agglomeration; thermodynamic equilibrium modeling;

    Abstract : Over the past few decades, a growing interest in the thermal conversion of alternative fuels such as biomass and waste-derived fuels has been observed among the energy-producing companies. Apart from meeting the increasing demand for sustainable heat and power production, other advantages such as reducing global warming and ameliorating landfilling issues have been identified. 5. 5. Detecting, Modelling and Measuring Disturbances in Fixed-bed Combustion

    Author : Sven Hermansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; CFD modelling; solid fuels; grate furnaces; moisture content; fixed bed; combustion;

    Abstract : Combustion of fixed fuel beds in grate furnaces is one of the most common techniques within production of heat and power from solid fuels. The grate furnace used to be a working horse for combustion of hard coal, while today the incitement of using renewable fuel sources has turned biomass and municipal waste into dominating fuel types.
