  1. 16. Multiscale materials design of hard coatings for improved fracture resistance and thermal stability

    Author : Phani Kumar Yalamanchili; Magnus Odén; Naureen Ghafoor; Emilio Jiménez-Piqué; Jon Molina; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Physical vapor deposited hard coatings comprised of cubic (c) transition metal (TM)-Al-N, and (TM)-Si-N are the current workhorse materials for a large number of metal cutting and wear resistant applications to fight against the extreme conditions of temperature and stress simultaneously. In spite of a high degree of sophistication in terms of material choice and microstructural design, a lower fracture resistance and limited thermal stability of the coatings remains a technological challenge in the field. 2. 17. On Peritectic Reactions and Transformations and Hot Forming of Cast Structures

    Author : Hani Nassar; Hasse Fredriksson; Rian Dippenaar; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; peritectic reactions; massive transformations; thermal analysis; Fe-base alloys; steels; growth irregularities; hot forming; compression testing; flow stress; grain size.; Metallurgical manufacturing engineering; Metallurgisk produktionsteknik; Metallurgical process engineering; Metallurgisk processteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with peritectic reactions and transformations that occur during the solidification of many alloys. Peritectics are believed to be a major cause of crack-formation in many steels, thus, good knowledge of the mechanisms by which these phenomena occur is essential for preventing such defects. 3. 18. The mechanisms of metal expansion penetration during solidification of grey cast iron

    Author : Izudin Dugic; Preben Norgaard Hansén; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Grey cast iron; solidification; solidification modelling; graphite expansion; molar volume; casting simulation; thermal analysis; thermoanalysis cup; casting temperature; inoculation; inoculant; metal expansion penetration; eutectic cell size; primary austenite; austenite grain; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The production of high quality castings requires the casting surface to be clean and free from defects. One type of defect often found is caused by metal penetration into the sand mould. READ MORE

  4. 19. Influence of thermal loading on mechanical properties of railway wheel steels

    Author : Krste Cvetkovski; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; contact creep.; rolling contact fatigue; martensite tempering; shear deformation; Railway wheel steels; heat treatment; residual stress; rapid heating; low cycle fatigue;

    Abstract : Material integrity and properties of wheels are critical in railway traffic, as wheels fulfil the important function of transferring load and traction from the vehicle to the rail track. Steels with a pearlitic microstructure are commonly used for wheels due to their height strength, low cost and good wear properties. READ MORE

  5. 20. Failure of thermal barrier coatings under thermal and mechanical fatigue loading : microstructural observations and modelling aspects

    Author : Håkan Brodin; Anette M. Karlsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : thermal barrier coating; TBC; delamination; crack initiation; crack propagation; crack growth; oxidation; alumina; spinel; MCrAIY; diffusion; fatigue; modelling; modeling; degradation; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Industrial and air-borne gas turbine hot components suffer from creep, oxidation, corrosion and microstructural degradation if not shielded from the hot and aggressive combustion gases. Two major strategies commercially available are adopted; film cooling by pressurised air and application of protective coatings. READ MORE
