  3. 3. Environmentally Degradable Polyethylene : Effects of Additives and Environment on the Degradation and Degradation products

    Author : Farideh Khabbaz; KTH; []
    Keywords : LDPE; polyethylene; oxidative degradation; photo-oxidation; thermo-oxidation; degradation products; photosensitisers; pro-oxidant; starch; master-batch; gas chromatography mass-spectrometry; GC-MS; solid phase microextraction; SPME;

    Abstract : This thesis summarises and compares the influences ofdifferent additives (photosensitisers, pro-oxidants, abiodegradable filler) on blown low-density polyethylene (LDPE)films during photo- and thermal degradation with respect tochemical changes in the polymer matrices and identifieddegradation products. Additives studied were irondimethyldithiocarbamate (FeDMC), nickel dibutyldithocarbamate(NiDBC), carbon black, starch, a pro-oxidant that consisted ofmanganese stearate together with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)or natural rubber (NR) and a master batch containing linearLDPE, starch and pro-oxidant. 4. 4. Modelling the degradation processes in high-impact polystyrene during the first use and subsequent recycling

    Author : Francisco Vilaplana; Sigbritt Karlsson; Monika Ek; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Recycling; high-impact polystyrene; degradation; quality analysis; thermal analysis; vibrational spectroscopy; chromatography techniques; thermo-oxidation; reprocessing; dynamic mechanical properties; polybutadiene microstructure.; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : Polymers are subjected to physical and chemical changes during their processing, service life, and further recovery, and they may also interact with impurities that can alter their composition. These changes substantially modify the stabilisation mechanisms and mechanical properties of recycled polymers. READ MORE

  5. 5. Long-term Properties of Sustainable Polymeric Materials : Mechanical Recycling and Use of Renewable Resources

    Author : Emma Strömberg; Sigbritt Karlsson; Amparo Ribes-Greus; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sustainable materials; mechanical recycling; polyolefin; reprocessing; accelerated ageing; chromatography; biofilm; microenvironment chamber; environmental degradation; biocomposite; nanocomposite; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : New strategies for management of the accumulating amounts of plastic waste are required, to achieve a sustainable development in terms of material production and use. After service life, the materials should be recovered and recycled efficiently to provide a valuable resource for future applications. READ MORE
