1. Bioanalysis using capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry : Applied on proteins, protein nanofibrils and polyvinyl alcohol microbubbles
Abstract : The sequencing of the genome of various species, including the human species, have led to increased understanding about how a protein structure is generated, and how specific structures are related to the proteins’ functionality. In paper I and II of this thesis, the folding of proteins in vitro to form hierarchical nanostructures, which in vivo often have a pathological effect, have been studied. READ MORE

2. Cell-protein-material Interactions on Bioceramics and Model Surfaces
Abstract : The objective of this thesis was to investigate and characterize the interaction between blood proteins and different surfaces with emphasis on protein adsorption to bioceramics and model surfaces. Special effort was made to monitor the spontaneous and selective adsorption of proteins from human plasma and to examine the orientation, conformation and functional behavior of single proteins after adsorption. 3. Separation of Proteins with Capillary Electrophoresis in Coated Capillaries with and without Electroosmosis : Studies on Zone Broadening and Analytical Performances
Abstract : Proteins have such structural features that they may interact with different types of surfaces by all possible forces, i.e., electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic. In this thesis two different types of coatings for fused silica capillaries aimed to eliminate such interactions have been studied. READ MORE

4. Identification and Characterization of Peptides and Proteins using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry
Abstract : Mass spectrometry has in recent years been established as the standard method for protein identification and characterization in proteomics with excellent intrinsic sensitivity and specificity. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance is the mass spectrometric technique that provides the highest resolving power and mass accuracy, increasing the amount of information that can be obtained from complex samples. 5. Unwarping and Analysing Electrophoresis Gels
Abstract : Gel electrophoresis is a technology in molecular biology that is used to separate and quantify biomolecules, for example DNA and proteins. Ideally the position in a gel image corresponds to one or several properties of the molecules, such as size and net charge, but in practise the separation pattern is often warped, that is, geometrically distorted.
