1. Process development for platform chemical production from agricultural and forestry residues
Abstract : As part of a bio-based economy, biorefineries are envisaged to sustainably produce platform chemicals via biochemical conversion of agricultural and forestry residues. However, supply risks, the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass, and inhibitor formation during pretreatment impair the economic feasibility of such biorefineries. READ MORE

2. Design of Cellulose-Based Materials via Sustainable and Scalable Processes
Abstract : Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues in today’s world. Addressing this problem calls for the development of environmentally friendly alternatives that would reduce the amount of persistent plastic waste. READ MORE

3. Bio-based materials from crambe and carinata industrial oilseed meals : compression moulded and extruded oilseed meal plastics
Abstract : Protein-based plastics are considered as a new route for valorisation of oilseed meal from the industrial oil crops Crambe abyssinia (crambe) and Brassica carinata (carinata) as they cannot be used for animal feed or human food. To convert oilseed meals into protein-based plastic films compression moulding was used with varying processing temperature, chemical additives and protein extraction conditions. READ MORE

4. Food or fuel? : trade-offs between food and biofuels globally and in small-scale organic agriculture
Abstract : There are great expectations on agriculture to provide both food and fuels in the future. Previous attempts to estimate the global bioenergy potential have produced varying results, indicating major uncertainty. This thesis investigated the global theoretical 'potential', or limit, for biofuels based on current agricultural systems. READ MORE

5. Autonomous navigation of an articulated vehicle in agriculture
Abstract : Disrupting agricultural vehicular automation is imperative for the solutions to global as well local challenges in agricultural production system. Historically, application of scientific and technological developments through increased mechanization and precision farming have provided several opportunities for agricultural production in general and within forage handling operations.
