    Abstract : The neuropeptide Y (NPY) system consists of 3-4 peptides and 4-7 receptors in vertebrates. It has powerful effects on appetite regulation and is involved in many other biological processes including blood pressure regulation, bone formation and anxiety. READ MORE

  2. 2. Towards Classification and Functional Description of Enzymes: A case study of feruloyl esterases

    Author : Gupta Udatha; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; descriptors; enzyme immobilization; catalytic triad; pharmacophore; enzyme promiscuity; functional classification; molecular docking; feruloyl esterases; protein evolution; structure-function relationship;

    Abstract : The prediction of enzyme functionality from sequence or structure data remains a challenging task that can be best addressed by studying the structure-function relationships determined from previously available information. This thesis work was focused on developing a reliable classification and functional description for the feruloyl esterase (FAE) enzyme family, whose members’ possess both structural and catalytic promiscuity. 3. 3. Architecture and function of the insulin granule secretion machinery

    Author : Peng Yin; Sebastian Barg; Herbert Gaisano; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Docking; Syntaxin-1A; Voltage-gated Ca2 Channels; Exocytosis; Type-2 Diabetes;

    Abstract : Insulin is released into the blood stream to normalize elevated blood glucose, for example after a meal. The hormone is synthesized by β-cells in the endocrine pancreas, and stored in small vesicles, known as secretory granules, until required. When glucose is elevated, these granules undergo regulated exocytosis and thereby secrete the hormone. READ MORE

  4. 4. Regulation of docking and priming in pancreatic α- and β-cells

    Author : Muhmmad Omar-Hmeadi; Sebastian Barg; Patrick MacDonald; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type-2 diabetes; glucagon; insulin; somatostatin; exocytosis;

    Abstract : The secretion of islet hormones from endocrine cells of the pancreas plays vital roles in maintaining glucose homeostasis. Dysfunction of these cells leads to diabetes, a devastating metabolic disorder affecting millions worldwide, but underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular simulations of G protein-coupled receptors : A journey into structure-based ligand design and receptor function

    Author : Pierre Matricon; Jens Carlsson; Bjørn Olav Brandsdal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; G Protein-Coupled Receptor; Molecular Dynamics Simulations; Free Energy Perturbation; Ligand Binding; Fragment-Based Lead Discovery; Molecular Docking Screens; Homology Modeling; GPCR Activation Mechanism; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biotechnology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär bioteknik;

    Abstract : The superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) contains a large number of important drug targets. These cell surface receptors recognize extracellular signaling molecules, which stimulates intracellular pathways that play major roles in human physiology. READ MORE
